Valve has published its latest Steam hardware survey results for August 2026, revealing that the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 remains the most popular graphics card among personal computer gamers worldwide.
The monthly statistics gathered by the digital distribution platform show Microsoft Windows 11 continuing to expand its dominance, with adoption reaching 71 percent of surveyed users following a monthly gain of 0.71 percentage points.
Valve Corporation, the American video game developer and publisher headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, operates Steam as the primary storefront and community platform for PC gaming. The company automatically collects configuration data from opted-in users each month to assist game developers in optimizing titles for current player hardware specifications.
Average gaming computer specifications
According to the data for August 2026, the average gaming computer features a 64-bit version of Windows 11, 16 gigabytes of system memory, and a processor running at clock speeds between 2.3 and 2.69 gigahertz. The survey recorded eight physical processor cores as standard, paired with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 graphics processor featuring 16 gigabytes of video memory.
Display configurations remained centered on a standard resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels, while English was identified as the primary language setting. Computer storage profiles showed total drive capacity exceeding one terabyte, with free disk space ranging between 100 and 249 gigabytes. Among virtual reality hardware users, the Oculus Quest 2 maintained its position as the top headset choice.
Graphics card market leadership
Nvidia released the GeForce RTX 3060 in 2021 as part of its Ampere graphics processor generation, targeting mainstream 1080p resolution gaming. Five years after launch, the model is still installed in nearly four percent of all gaming computers on Steam. Other widely used graphics cards in the survey include the RTX 4060, RTX 5070, RTX 3050, and RTX 5060. In June, Nvidia re-released the 12-gigabyte memory variant of the RTX 3060 at its original 2021 retail price point.
Operating systems and processor trends
The rise of Windows 11 has coincided with a decline in older operating systems, with Windows 10 falling below 23 percent market share among Steam gamers. Nvidia previously announced that it would permanently end driver support for Windows 10, accelerating user transitions to newer operating system builds.
In the central processor market, Intel processors power 53 percent of surveyed gaming computers, while AMD chips account for 46 percent. Among Apple macOS players, portable systems lead usage, with the MacBook Pro accounting for 35 percent and the MacBook Air taking 29 percent, while seven percent play on desktop iMac systems.
Market analysts have also compiled ratings for the best secondhand graphics cards in 2026, highlighting several budget options available for under 150 dollars on the secondary market.
