The Russian Northern Fleet hydrographic vessel Romuald Muklevich has returned to its permanent home base in Murmansk Oblast after completing research operations in the Atlantic Ocean.

The press service of the Northern Fleet confirmed that naval hydrographers fully executed their assigned research program during the two-month mission.
According to the fleet's press service, specialists collected data to update maritime navigation charts and publications to bring them to modern standards. The expedition team also studied radionavigation and satellite systems while conducting route surveys of the seabed topography.
Hydrography is the science of measuring and mapping the physical features of oceans and navigable waters. Precise nautical charts and ocean floor data are essential for naval vessels and merchant ships to navigate safely and avoid underwater hazards.
Survey vessel background and service history
The Romuald Muklevich is a Project 865 hydrographic survey ship. Vessels of this class are equipped with specialized oceanographic sensors, echo sounders, and navigation tracking systems designed for ocean mapping.
The vessel was officially delivered to the Soviet Navy in 1990. It initially carried out operational tasks as part of the Baltic Fleet before being transferred to the Northern Fleet in 1991.
Murmansk Oblast is located in northwestern Russia along the Barents and White Seas. The region serves as the main operational hub for the Northern Fleet, which commands naval operations across the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans.

In a separate naval update reported in July, the small sea tanker Valentin Rykov officially joined the Baltic Fleet. The Project 03182 vessel is built to operate in northern waters and can break through ice up to 0.8 meters thick.
The Baltic Fleet is Russia's naval force stationed in the Baltic Sea, headquartered in Kaliningrad Oblast. Auxiliary sea tankers provide replenishment at sea, supplying warships with fuel and fresh water during extended naval deployments.
