American tennis player Taylor Townsend and her Czech partner Katerina Siniakova won the US Open women's doubles title at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday.
The top-seeded duo rallied from a set down to defeat unseeded Americans Ashlyn Krueger and Robin Montgomery 5-7, 6-0, 6-2, completing a career Grand Slam for both players.
Townsend, 30, and Siniakova dropped the first three games of the match before finding their rhythm at the net. After dropping the opening set, they dominated the remaining two sets to claim their fourth major title as a partnership.
The victory marked a personal milestone for Townsend, who is ranked second in the world in women's doubles, while Siniakova maintained her standing as the world's top-ranked doubles competitor.
Following the match point, Townsend dropped to her knees in celebration on the hard court in Queens, New York. The victory gave the pair redemption after they lost in the US Open doubles final one year ago to Erin Routliffe and Gabriela Dabrowski.
"If flipping the script had a face," Townsend said after the match, "you'd see my face."
Siniakova acknowledged the tension early in the contest as the top seeds struggled to settle into their game. "There was lot of nerves," Siniakova said. "We were really fighting for this one, so I'm just really proud. We did it."
A Powerful Statement on Black Representation
During the trophy presentation at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Townsend addressed the crowd to highlight the significance of Black representation on one of tennis' biggest stages.
"I take a lot of pride in this, being a Black woman here," Townsend said. She pointed out that Friday's schedule featured significant Black representation across both the doubles final and the men's singles competition.
"There's two Black women in the finals, two Black men in the semifinals," Townsend said, referring to herself, Montgomery, and American singles semifinalists Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe, who played on Friday night. "This is a phenomenal time for tennis, for inspiration, for representation."
Townsend also offered direct thanks to former world number six Chanda Rubin, who was present on court during the post-match ceremony. Rubin, an American player who reached a career-high ranking of world number six in 1996, played key roles in advancing American women's tennis.
"Chanda, it means a lot for you to be standing here as well because you paved the way for us, so thank you," Townsend told Rubin. "This is a phenomenal time for tennis and it's just getting started."
Historically, a total of 18 US Open singles titles have been won by Black players. Serena Williams won six titles, while her sister Venus Williams and tennis pioneer Althea Gibson each won two. American star Coco Gauff added to that legacy by winning the women's singles title in 2023.
On the men's side, however, Arthur Ashe remains the only Black player to win a men's singles championship at the US Open during the Open Era, achieving the feat in 1968. The main stadium at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens, bears his name.
Four Major Titles as a Partnership
The triumph in New York completed a career Grand Slam for the duo, meaning they have now won all four major tennis tournaments together. A Grand Slam comprises the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.
Townsend and Siniakova began their Grand Slam run by winning Wimbledon in 2024. They followed that title with victories at the Australian Open in 2025 and the French Open earlier in 2026 before securing the US Open trophy.
The US Open title is the fourth major championship of Townsend's career. For Siniakova, it represents her 12th Grand Slam doubles trophy overall. Siniakova previously won seven major doubles titles with fellow Czech player Barbora Krejcikova and one title alongside Coco Gauff.
Townsend entered the doubles competition after being eliminated from the women's singles tournament by world number one Aryna Sabalenka. Despite the singles defeat, the American expressed confidence in her form heading into the doubles draw.
Unseeded Finalists Exceed Expectations
Opponents Ashlyn Krueger and Robin Montgomery enjoyed an unexpected run to the final despite holding doubles rankings of 570th and 610th respectively.
Entering the tournament as wild card entries, Krueger and Montgomery defeated defending champions Erin Routliffe and Gabriela Dabrowski by beating each player's respective partnership in the quarterfinals and semifinals.
The tournament marked a reunion for Krueger and Montgomery five years after they won the US Open girls' doubles title together. They previously advanced one round in the women's doubles draw in 2021.
"We put (the wild card) to really good use," Krueger said after the final.
Surging Participation Across the Sport
The strong representation at Flushing Meadows coincides with broader growth in tennis participation across the United States.
In February 2026, the United States Tennis Association reported that 27.3 million Americans played tennis in 2025. That total represented a new record high for the sixth consecutive year.
Analysis conducted by the National Golf Foundation examined data from the Physical Activity Council Study on Sports and Physical Activity and the PLAY Study on Participation and Engagement. The analysis showed a 14 percent increase in participation among Black players and a 10 percent increase among women.
