Peruvian singer Thamara Gómez, a member of the musical group Las Estrellas de la Cumbia, has reported an extortion attack after criminals detonated an explosive device outside her home in Sullana, Piura, demanding a payment of S/50,000.
The extortionists left threat messages demanding the money to refrain from attacking the singer or her family members. Security cameras captured a suspect approaching the property, where he left two handwritten notes before returning a few minutes later to set off the explosive at the front of the house.
One of the threat messages warned that the extortionists wanted 50,000 soles for her and her family's safety. The note instructed her to find a bandit to call and resolve the matter with them, threatening that if she failed to do so, they would make her know hell, starting with her family. The explosion caused alarm among local residents and fear among the occupants of the residence.
Following the attack, the former Son del Duke member went to authorities to formalize her complaint and request personal guarantees. Investigations remain ongoing to identify those responsible for the bombing and clarify the circumstances surrounding the extortion.
Previous extortion attempts
The attack follows earlier incidents that the singer disclosed publicly. In a March 2025 interview on the program Crónicas de impacto, Gómez revealed that she had already faced extortion on four previous occasions, which severely affected her peace of mind and her family environment.
During that interview, Gómez said that people can no longer even walk to the corner of their home out of fear that something might happen to them. She noted that the problem extends beyond her experience as a Peruvian singer, stating that corner store owners and many other Peruvians face the same situation.
Support from Las Estrellas de la Cumbia
Following news of the attack, Las Estrellas de la Cumbia issued a statement expressing full support and solidarity with Gómez while condemning the acts of violence. The musical group stated that it remains united to accompany the performer and her family during this difficult time.
The orchestra also expressed confidence that authorities would conduct thorough investigations. In the statement, the group added that it trusts newly elected President of the Republic Keiko Sofía Fujimori and competent institutions to identify and punish those responsible for the attack.
