Mafer Portugal, daughter of singer Tommy Portugal, has resigned from cumbia group Papillón after nearly a year with the act, citing harassment and intimidation by some of her fellow members and their families.

The singer said the decision was driven by her personal wellbeing. She said the resignation was not easy but that she had suffered harassment from certain bandmates and their relatives, which led her to prioritize her own peace of mind.

Portugal joined Papillón in October 2025. Despite the circumstances behind her departure, she said she was leaving grateful for the opportunity and confident she had given her best at every performance. She also thanked the group’s staff and management for the support they provided during her time there.

Papillón Responds

After the resignation became public, Papillón posted a farewell message on its social media channels. The group said it was saying goodbye to a great artist who had left a very special mark on the Papillón family.

The group thanked Portugal for her dedication, talent and professionalism, and for every moment shared during her time with them. It added that her voice and charisma had become part of their history and had carried their music to many people. The group wished her success in future projects and said she would always have a home with them.
