Tottenham Hotspur have signed Brazilian winger Savinho from Manchester City for a total fee of £85 million as the North London club attempts to reshape a squad that narrowly avoided relegation last season.
Journalist Ben Jacobs reported on X that Spurs confirmed the 22-year-old joined from the Premier League champions for an initial £75 million plus £10 million in bonuses. The overall package of £85 million equates to slightly over €99 million.
The expensive move comes after Tottenham, under head coach Roberto De Zerbi, suffered a heavy 0-3 defeat against Brentford in their opening match of the new Premier League season. Tottenham finished just two points above the relegation zone in the previous campaign and have now spent more than €350 million in the current summer transfer window.
Tottenham transfer spending and squad revamp
Before completing the deal for Savinho, Tottenham paid Newcastle €108 million to sign midfielder Sandro Tonali. The club also spent €99 million to acquire Mateus Fernandes from West Ham and invested €60 million to bring in Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton.
Savinho arrives at Tottenham despite playing primarily as a backup player at Manchester City last season. The 22-year-old Brazilian made 36 appearances across all competitions for the Sky Blues, scoring three goals and registering four assists while totaling 1,502 minutes on the pitch. He was named in the starting lineup only 14 times.
Speaking at Savinho's official presentation in Tottenham colors, De Zerbi emphasized that the winger brings energy, imagination, and quality to wide areas of the pitch. The Italian manager added that Savinho possesses the courage to take on defenders and the creative ability to change the course of a match, stating that the team is delighted to welcome him.
Record Premier League transfer window
The acquisition of Savinho forms part of a broader trend of massive spending across the Premier League during the current summer window. Other major moves involving fees near or exceeding €100 million include Morgan Rogers joining Chelsea from Aston Villa for €138 million and Elliot Anderson moving from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City for €135 million.
With exactly one week remaining until the transfer window closes on September 1, clubs in England's top flight are closing in on last year'record outlay of £3.14 billion, which exceeded €3.6 billion. As of August 18, Premier League clubs had already spent approximately £2.14 billion, or €2.47 billion, on new players.
Manchester City return to action in their next Premier League fixture when they travel to face Crystal Palace on August 28, with kickoff set for 21:00.
