Generative artificial intelligence has forced higher education institutions to shift how they train designers, moving the focus from technical execution to strategic direction.

With technology now able to produce illustrations and visual concepts in seconds, the academic debate has moved away from restricting these tools. The focus is now on identifying the human skills graduates require to remain relevant in the job market. Industry employers are increasingly seeking strategists who can direct technology rather than executors of technical tasks.

Eduardo Velarde, the academic head of design courses at the University of Sciences and Arts of Latin America, said the integration of artificial intelligence in classrooms is an opportunity to elevate the standards of the profession rather than a threat to jobs. The private university, based in Lima, Peru, specialises in education for the creative industries. Velarde said that while there is anxiety about designers being replaced, only technical tasks are actually being automated.

Instead of competing with machines, he said designers must take on a directive role, acting as strategists who manage systems, experiences and creative solutions that rely on technology. He noted that while artificial intelligence can produce dozens of iterations in a minute, it does not possess cultural context, ethical judgement or sensitivity.

According to Velarde, universities need to produce professionals who can ask appropriate questions, audit the results produced by algorithms and make conceptual decisions that have a tangible impact.

Changing industry demands

This shift in educational priorities aligns with global employment forecasts. The World Economic Forum, an international non-governmental organisation known for its annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, noted in its Future of Jobs Report that companies still value analytical thinking above all other skills. The report also found that creativity is the fastest-growing competency in the workplace.

Similarly, analysis by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development indicates that automating repetitive tasks shifts the competitive focus towards resilience, ethical leadership and the capacity to adapt, rather than eliminating the need for human workers. The intergovernmental organisation, which has 38 member countries, noted that in the creative sector, this represents a permanent move from operational work to strategic management.

To prepare professionals for this automated environment, Velarde outlined five strategic areas that higher education institutions need to reinforce.

Key strategic skills

The first area focuses on creative judgement and curation. Velarde said professionals should view technology as a production assistant, meaning their value comes from their ability to curate, edit and provide meaning to visual narratives aligned with a brand's purpose, rather than their mastery of specific software.

The second area is the application of strategic thinking to design. This involves diagnosing the genuine needs of the market and society before putting forward a design, which requires an understanding of context that algorithms cannot achieve independently.

Thirdly, universities must encourage a multidisciplinary vision and adaptability. This requires the development of socio-emotional skills to coordinate diverse teams, handle environments experiencing rapid change and adjust working methods in response to technological advancements.

Ethics and continuous learning

The fourth priority is critical thinking and ethical responsibility. Velarde said designers must audit the use of artificial intelligence concerning intellectual property, cultural biases and accuracy, ensuring their work respects diversity.

Finally, the framework emphasises continuous learning and cognitive flexibility. This involves training students to unlearn old habits and independently adopt new methodologies, making intellectual curiosity the primary way professionals can keep their skills up to date.
