Unusual propulsion design and rising costs
Efforts to modernize American 155mm caliber artillery began in the late 1970s. The United States military officially approved the Advanced Field Artillery System program in 1987, seeking a new vehicle that could match the key performance characteristics of Soviet equivalents.
The 155mm shell is the standard heavy field artillery ammunition caliber used across Western and NATO military forces for long-range indirect fire.
The program was renamed Crusader in 1994. Designers originally planned to equip the self-propelled gun with an exotic propulsion mechanism using a fuel injection system inside a special chamber with moving pistons. The unusual design aimed to achieve extended firing ranges while using relatively inexpensive ammunition.
However, developers working on the liquid propellant charge failed to complete the system on schedule. Military planners abandoned the exotic propulsion concept in 1996. Despite dropping the complex fuel injection design, the program remained extremely expensive, with the construction of its sole prototype costing two billion dollars.

Advanced specifications and eventual cancellation
On paper, the XM2001 Crusader was the most sophisticated self-propelled artillery unit in the world. It featured an automated, unmanned turret that allowed the military to reduce the vehicle crew to just three personnel.
Unmanned turrets use automated ammunition handling systems to load heavy shells into the breech, eliminating the need for human loaders inside the fighting compartment.
The vehicle received an actively cooled gun capable of delivering a maximum rate of fire of 12 rounds per minute. Power came from a 1,500-horsepower gas turbine engine designed to give the heavy howitzer enough speed to keep pace with frontline armored units.
Gas turbine engines offer high power-to-weight ratios for military armored vehicles, allowing heavy tracked weapons platforms to accelerate rapidly across rough terrain.
During field testing, the prototype achieved a firing rate of 10.4 rounds per minute. The United States military originally planned to officially adopt the Crusader artillery system into active service in 2008.
The program was abruptly canceled in 2002. The incoming leadership at the Pentagon concluded that the XM2001 Crusader was insufficiently mobile and lacked the required accuracy for future combat conditions.

Current artillery challenges
The cancellation of the Crusader left the United States Army continuing to rely on its legacy self-propelled howitzers. Defense journal The National Interest reported in October 2025 that existing American M109 self-propelled howitzers could face destruction by Chinese artillery in the event of a direct military confrontation.
The M109 howitzer has served as the primary tracked self-propelled artillery piece for the United States Army since its introduction during the Cold War era.
