US envoys Kushner and Witkoff to visit Russia and Ukraine

United States envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff will travel to Russia and Ukraine this weekend to advance efforts toward a peace agreement.

The diplomatic trip is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, according to reports from Russian news agency TASS, which cited an informed source.

Discussions regarding a visit by the two American negotiators to Ukraine are currently ongoing, with September 6 identified as a potential date for their arrival.

The planned weekend visits were also reported by the Greek news agency Athens-Macedonian News Agency, citing initial Russian media reports.

Diplomatic envoys and peace negotiations

Jared Kushner served as a senior advisor in the presidential administration of Donald Trump. An American businessman and investor, Kushner previously played a prominent role in Middle Eastern diplomatic initiatives, including the negotiation of the Abraham Accords normalization agreements between Israel and several Arab nations.

Steve Witkoff is an American real estate investor, executive, and diplomatic representative who has participated in high-level international dialogue and conflict mediation efforts.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine escalated into a major war following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. International diplomatic initiatives have periodically sought to establish frameworks for ceasefires, humanitarian corridors, and peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv.

Kremlin response and Ukrainian security probe

Following reports of the planned visit, the Kremlin stated that a peace settlement for Ukraine remains possible. However, Russian government officials did not confirm the scheduled visit of the American envoys and added that there is currently no solid basis for a settlement.

In a separate development in Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced an investigation following a shooting incident between agents of two security services. Ukrainian authorities confirmed that two individuals involved in the incident are now formally designated as suspects.

TASS is the state-owned news agency of the Russian Federation, headquartered in Moscow, which serves as a primary official outlet for government statements. The Athens-Macedonian News Agency is the national news agency of Greece, providing international and domestic news coverage.

Upcoming diplomatic timetable

Negotiation teams continue talks to finalize the schedule for the American representatives. Discussions surrounding the proposed September 6 visit to Ukraine remain ongoing as diplomatic efforts proceed over the weekend.
