US Midwest faces severe storms and flash flood risks

A severe storm system is bringing intense rain and dangerous weather to the United States Midwest and southern Great Lakes region starting Monday, August 10. Fox Weather reported that a second line of storms struck southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois late Sunday afternoon, raising concerns among climatologists for the safety of millions of residents.

The adverse weather conditions stem from a collision between a highly humid air mass moving from the Gulf of Mexico and a low-pressure system. Heavy rainfall and dangerous storms threaten to cause flash flooding across affected areas, with urban zones facing the highest risk. Strong winds also threaten to damage structures and knock down power lines.

Midwest storm movement and rainfall totals

The weather front will move toward the eastern region of the country on Tuesday, August 11. Heavy rain and lightning storms will persist in the Midwest while extending into the Ohio River Valley. Forecasts indicate Chicago will be among the cities hardest hit by the storm front.

Widespread rainfall accumulations between 2 and 3 inches are expected in cities including Chicago and Cleveland. Higher rainfall totals ranging from 3 to 5 inches are predicted for northern Indiana and northern Ohio.

Extended flood risks in West Virginia

Fox Weather warned that heavy downpours could persist through Wednesday, August 12 in the southern Great Lakes region. In West Virginia, the storm impact may linger until Thursday, August 13.

Some areas in West Virginia face a risk of recording up to 6 inches of rainfall over the multi-day period. That volume of water has the capacity to saturate soil and accelerate stream currents, creating a danger of flooding in homes and on roadways.
