Volos recovered from a two-goal deficit to secure a 2-2 draw against Kalamata in the opening match of the Greek Cup league phase.
Kalamata took a 2-0 lead into halftime, but Volos responded in the second half with a goal from substitute Urtado and a free kick by Gonzalez.
The Greek Cup is the country's premier domestic knockout competition, bringing together clubs from across the Greek football pyramid. Volos, representing the Thessaly region, entered the fixture looking to make a strong start in the league phase of the tournament against their opponents.
The hosts started brightly and created their first opportunity in the 10th minute when Regis shot from a promising position. Volos continued to press and had a major chance to open the scoring in the 23rd minute, but Kalamata goalkeeper Vasiljevic saved a one-on-one effort from Furtado.
Against the run of play, Kalamata took the lead three minutes later. Bonetto provided the assist for Bolivar, who finished from close range to make it 1-0. Volos nearly equalised in the 38th minute when a shot from Gonzalez struck the goalpost.
Second half comeback
Instead of drawing level, the hosts fell further behind just one minute later. Liatsikouras set up Bonetto, who fired the ball past Volos goalkeeper Koselev to give Kalamata a 2-0 advantage heading into the break. Furtado was forced off with an injury just before halftime and was replaced by Urtado.
Volos managed to turn the match around in the second half. In the 74th minute, Lamprou played a precise through ball to Urtado. The substitute found himself one-on-one with Vasiljevic and reduced the deficit to 2-1.
The equaliser arrived in the 83rd minute. Gonzalez produced a spectacular free kick to level the score at 2-2, sealing the final result for the Thessalian side.
Both managers utilised their squads heavily as the match progressed. Volos started with Koselev, Grosdis, Es Saoubi, Kargas, Mygas, Bare, Refatlari, Charalampoglou, Furtado, Gonzalez, and Regis Crespi, before introducing Komba, Tzoka, and Lamprou in the second half. Kalamata fielded a starting lineup featuring Vasiljevic, Chatzitheodoridis, Guesan, Bakayoko, Ignjatovic, Caresao, Hamza, Liatsikouras, Bonetto, Sigurdsson, and Bolivar, later bringing on Moreira, Pineiro, Mouzakis, Martin and Rodriguez to try and maintain their advantage.
