Brisk walking and running both significantly reduce high blood pressure, but consistency is far more important than exercise intensity, according to medical experts interviewed by health publication EatingWell.
Dr. Oluwatosin Ajao and Dr. Nneoma Oparaji explained that while running produces slightly larger reductions in blood pressure readings, both forms of aerobic exercise deliver vital cardiovascular benefits, lower stress, and improve blood vessel flexibility.
Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, forces the heart to work harder to pump blood throughout the body. Left unmanaged, elevated blood pressure damages arteries and substantially increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure.
How Walking Affects Blood Pressure
Physicians outlined three primary mechanisms through which walking improves cardiovascular health. Dr. Oluwatosin Ajao stated that walking is one of the simplest and most effective methods to bring down blood pressure levels.
Ajao noted that engaging in brisk walking for 20 to 40 minutes three to five times a week can improve heart health and help decrease stroke risk over time. Regular walking helps lower both systolic blood pressure, which measures the pressure in blood vessels when the heart beats, and diastolic blood pressure, which measures pressure between beats.
Research published in the British Journal of Cardiac Nursing demonstrated that walking reduces systolic blood pressure by 4 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure by 2 mm Hg. Ajao emphasized that while these reductions might appear minor, even small drops in blood pressure have a lasting positive effect on long-term health and disease risk.
Walking also plays a major role in lowering stress levels. A study published in the Cureus Journal of Medical Science identified chronic high stress as an established risk factor for developing hypertension, noting that unmanaged stress increases the likelihood of adverse health outcomes.
Ajao explained that walking does not merely burn calories, but actively dampens the body's stress response, including the fight-or-flight system. Furthermore, a large study published in JMIR Public Health and Surveillance found that regular walking effectively alleviates symptoms of anxiety and mild depression.
In addition to stress reduction, regular walking directly relaxes blood vessels. Ajao stated that walking decreases activity within the renin-angiotensin system while boosting the production of nitric oxide. This biochemical shift widens blood vessels, improves blood flow, and steadily lowers blood pressure over time.
The Impact of Running on Cardiovascular Health
Running also offers powerful benefits for blood pressure management, operating through four main pathways. Ajao noted that running can lead to marked reductions in blood pressure, particularly among individuals who already suffer from hypertension.
She cited research showing that running lowers systolic blood pressure by 4.2 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure by 2.7 mm Hg. Researchers also discovered an important distinction for hypertension patients: moderate-intensity running lowers blood pressure more effectively than high-intensity workout sessions.
Running acts as a direct workout for the heart muscle itself. Dr. Nneoma Oparaji explained that running functions like strength training for the heart, training the organ to pump blood more efficiently so that it can perform more work with less physical effort, thereby lowering overall blood pressure.
Aerobic exercises like running also boost vascular function by encouraging the growth of new blood vessels. Ajao noted that regular exercise prompts the body to construct additional microscopic blood vessels, including arterioles and capillaries, which makes blood circulation much easier.
This vascular growth is especially important as people age. Arterial stiffness naturally increases with age, elevating cardiovascular risk, but regular aerobic activities such as running and walking can improve arterial stiffness in older adults. Ajao assured that consistent exercise maintains arterial flexibility, reduces inflammation, and lightens the heart's workload.
Finally, running acts as a potent stress management tool. Because elevated stress increases hypertension risks, regular running routines help individuals cope more effectively with daily stressful situations.
Choosing the Right Exercise Routine
When comparing the two activities, Oparaji explained that although running produces a slightly greater drop in blood pressure numbers, the single best exercise is whichever one an individual can perform consistently.
Running requires higher endurance and greater physical effort, which may pose a barrier for some people. Conversely, others prefer running because it covers the same physical distance in less time.
Medical experts stress that the main goal is making physical activity a permanent part of daily routine. Guidelines recommend completing at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, such as brisk walking or light jogging, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity, such as high-intensity running, or an equivalent combination of both.
Experts also emphasized adding strength training workouts at least two days per week to support healthy blood pressure levels. They advise individuals to consult a physician before launching any new exercise program to verify that it is safe for their condition.
Dietary habits also play a crucial supporting role alongside physical exercise. Cardiologists previously highlighted legumes, such as black beans, lentils, and chickpeas, as top foods for lowering blood pressure due to their rich concentration of potassium, magnesium, and dietary fiber.
