Wearing socks to bed aids sleep onset, Dr Valinducq says

Wearing socks to bed can help people fall asleep faster by keeping cold feet warm, according to physician Dr Vincent Valinducq on French television.

Speaking on the broadcast, Dr Valinducq explained that when the body prepares for sleep, its core temperature naturally drops by 0.5 to 1 degree. This physiological decrease is essential for triggering sleep onset, but cold feet can interfere with the natural process.

By wearing socks at bedtime, individuals can maintain their extremities at a comfortable temperature, smoothing the transition into sleep. Dr Valinducq noted that the simple habit offers a direct solution for anyone who struggles to fall asleep while suffering from cold feet.

Physiology of sleep and body temperature

Human body temperature follows a natural 24-hour circadian rhythm, dropping in the late evening to signal that it is time for rest. Thermoregulation relies heavily on the extremities, particularly the hands and feet, which contain specialized blood vessel networks. When these blood vessels dilate, heat escapes from the core body into the surrounding air, allowing internal temperatures to decrease. Conversely, when feet remain cold, blood vessels constrict, delaying heat loss and prolonging the time it takes to fall asleep.

Dr Valinducq delivered his recommendations during a segment on "Bonjour ! La Matinale TF1," a national morning television program. TF1 is France's leading private television network, and its morning show regularly features medical experts discussing daily health, wellness, and sleep hygiene topics for viewers.

Evening alternative for couples

For those who find wearing socks in bed unappealing or uncomfortable, Dr Valinducq outlined an alternative approach. People can wear socks earlier in the evening, such as while watching television, to warm up their feet before getting into bed.

The socks can then be removed immediately before slipping under the duvet. Dr Valinducq noted that this method provides the necessary thermal warming benefit without requiring nightwear on the feet. He added that while the habit is a matter of personal comfort, it also serves as a practical compromise for couples seeking to improve their overall sleep quality.
