Xavi Hernandez has signed a four-year contract to become the new head coach of the Netherlands national team following the resignation of Ronald Koeman after the World Cup.
The appointment comes after the Dutch squad was eliminated in the round of 16 by Morocco, prompting fans to criticise preparations and demand that Koeman step down from his post.
However, the Dutch Football Association revealed during Xavi's introductory press conference that the former FC Barcelona manager was not its primary candidate for the role. Nigel de Jong, the association's director of football, surprised gathered journalists by admitting that Xavi was only the third option on their shortlist.
De Jong explained that the governing body had first approached Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and then held discussions with Arne Slot before turning to Xavi, whom they believed was the best available choice for the post at this moment.
Addressing the revelation, Xavi told reporters that it did not matter whether he was the third choice or the tenth choice, insisting it remained a great honour for him to take charge of the national side.
Shortlist revelation and manager background
The former Spain midfielder had been out of work for two years following his departure from Barcelona, where he previously enjoyed a distinguished playing career. He welcomed his appointment by stating that he felt a special connection to Dutch football, having trained at Barcelona's La Masia academy under the heavy influence of Dutch coaching legends including Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels.
Xavi described himself as in some ways a son of Dutch football. He credited former Barcelona managers Louis van Gaal, under whom he made his senior debut for the Spanish club, and Frank Rijkaard with playing key roles in shaping his career as both a player and a manager.
When asked by journalists how he felt about the selection process, in comments reported by news outlet index.hr, Xavi reiterated that his development in Barcelona's youth system established his lasting affinity for Dutch football regardless of his placement on the shortlist.
Tactical plans and opening fixtures
Outlining his tactical vision for the national team, known as Oranje, Xavi stated that he intends to implement an offensive style centred on ball possession and controlling the match. He emphasised that dominating play and taking the initiative would bring the team closer to victory.
The new manager confirmed that he plans to set up the team in either a classic 4-3-3 or a 4-3-2-1 formation as he begins his tenure.
Xavi faces an immediate test in his first match in charge against Germany. Although the German national team is facing its own difficulties, Xavi noted that they remain a dangerous international opponent.
The Dutch Football Association, officially known as the KNVB, oversees professional football in the Netherlands. The national team will now look to rebuild under Xavi after its early departure from the World Cup.
