Xiaomi has presented its first wide-format foldable smartphone, the Xiaomi 18 Fold, at the IFA 2026 technology trade show. The new mobile device stands out with a red body design and runs on the manufacturer's new custom Xring O3 processor.
The product has been officially introduced, but Xiaomi does not plan to sell the handset outside China, according to a report by news outlet LIGA.net from the exhibition in Berlin.
Display specifications and body dimensions
The Xiaomi 18 Fold features a 7.58-inch internal OLED screen with a resolution of 2364x1672 pixels. On the outside, the device includes a 5.38-inch cover screen offering a resolution of 1168x1712 pixels.
Both panels support a 120 Hz refresh rate and reach a peak brightness of up to 4,000 nits. When folded closed, the smartphone measures 10.68 mm in thickness, which narrows to 5.02 mm when unfolded flat.
The wide-format design gives the handset a broader aspect ratio when unfolded compared to traditional book-style foldables. The internal display resolution of 2364x1672 pixels provides expanded screen real estate for multitasking, while the 5.38-inch external screen handles standard single-handed phone tasks.
Foldable smartphones rely on flexible screen panels that allow a handheld device to open into a larger tablet layout. High refresh rates ensure smooth scrolling transitions, while high nit ratings improve screen legibility under direct sunlight.
Processing hardware and camera setup
Performance on the device is driven by the Xring O3 chip, a processor developed internally by Xiaomi. Configurations for the phone offer up to 16 GB of random-access memory and up to 1 TB of built-in storage capacity.
The rear camera module is headed by a 200-megapixel primary sensor. It is accompanied by a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom and a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera, alongside two 16-megapixel selfie cameras for front-facing photos.
System-on-chip components integrate central processing units, graphics hardware, and artificial intelligence accelerators into a single silicon package. Developing proprietary chips like the Xring O3 helps technology companies optimize energy efficiency and thermal management across heavy workloads.
In-house processor design allows mobile hardware manufacturers to tailor chip performance specifically to their software ecosystems. Multi-camera configurations with periscope zoom systems enable long-range optical magnification without requiring thick camera lenses.
Battery performance and operating system
Battery life is provided by a 6,000 mAh battery cell. The power setup supports 67 W fast wired charging as well as 50 W wireless charging power.
Software on the handset is Xiaomi's HyperOS 4, built on top of the Android 17 operating system. Android is the open-source mobile platform developed by Google, while HyperOS serves as Xiaomi's customized software interface across its device ecosystem.
High-wattage charging systems allow large-capacity batteries to replenish power rapidly. A 67 W wired system delivers high current directly to the cell, while 50 W wireless charging provides rapid cable-free power delivery through magnetic induction pads.
Pricing structure and product context
In China, pricing for the Xiaomi 18 Fold starts at 10,999 yuan, equivalent to approximately $1,638. The top configuration equipped with 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage carries a price of 14,999 yuan, or roughly $2,234.
The announcement follows other recent battery-focused hardware releases from the company. Xiaomi previously introduced a handset capable of lasting up to three days on a 10,000 mAh battery, as well as the Redmi 17 and Redmi 17 5G models fitted with 7,500 mAh batteries.
