A contractor in Yekaterinburg will stand trial after allegedly defrauding homebuilding clients of more than 2.5 million rubles. The prosecutor's office in the Russian city approved the criminal indictment following an investigation into the builder's activities.
Prosecutors have submitted the case to the Leninsky District Court of Yekaterinburg for trial. The individual entrepreneur faces charges under Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which governs criminal fraud offenses.
According to the investigation, the contractor accepted funds from two clients between July 2024 and February 2025. The advance payments were intended to cover the construction of individual residential houses for the victims.
Law enforcement officials stated that the contractor created an outward appearance of active construction work at the sites. However, he failed to finish building the homes and instead misappropriated the clients' money.
Alleged construction fraud scheme
Yekaterinburg, located near the Ural Mountains, serves as the administrative centre of Sverdlovsk Oblast and is the fourth largest city in Russia. The city is a major economic and industrial hub with a growing market for private residential property development.
Under Russian criminal law, Article 159 classifies fraud as the unlawful seizure of property or acquisition of property rights achieved through deception or abuse of confidence. Legal proceedings under this article assess both the intent of the perpetrator and the total financial damage inflicted on the victims.
The Leninsky District Court is one of the key judicial venues in Yekaterinburg, handling significant criminal and civil trials. The court will examine the evidence submitted by prosecutors to determine criminal liability in the homebuilding case.
