Russian blogger Yury Dud is highly likely to lose his elite real estate in Moscow to state confiscation, according to lawyer Mikhail Pirogov. Speaking to Russian news outlet NEWS.ru, Pirogov stated that court proceedings could invalidate property transfers and hand the assets to the government.
The legal warning comes after Russian authorities launched the process to confiscate property belonging to Dud. The prominent commentator risks losing a three-room apartment in Moscow valued at 26 million rubles alongside a luxury home worth 75 million rubles.
Pirogov explained that Russian judges could strike down the transfer of Dud's luxury cottage to his wife, Olga Dud. If the court rules the transfer invalid, ownership of the country home would immediately transfer to the Russian state.
Legal Grounds for Property Confiscation
According to Pirogov, prosecutors can challenge the property transfer on several distinct legal grounds under Russian law. One primary basis is demonstrating that the transaction was a sham that carried no real legal consequences for either party.
A second ground involves arguing that the re-registration was executed to conceal another transaction, such as a fake sale without any actual money changing hands. Pirogov noted that courts can also invalidate transfers based on abuse of rights intended to harm the state as a potential creditor.
The lawyer added that sufficient grounds for property confiscation already exist under current Russian regulations. These include Dud's designation as a foreign agent, his listing as a terrorist and extremist, and an in-absentia court verdict for evading foreign agent obligations.
Background on Foreign Agent Laws
Dud was previously added to the foreign agent registry maintained by the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation. Russia introduced its foreign agent legislation to mandate that designated individuals and organizations register with the government, submit regular financial audits, and display prominent disclaimers on all published material.
In addition, Rosfinmonitoring, the Federal Financial Monitoring Service of the Russian Federation, placed Dud on its official list of terrorists and extremists. Inclusion on the Rosfinmonitoring list leads to frozen bank accounts, restricted financial operations, and severe economic limitations within Russia.
Dud gained widespread international recognition as a journalist, interviewer, and former editor-in-chief of the sports website Sports.ru. He built one of the most influential Russian-language YouTube channels, featuring long-form interviews with major cultural, political, and public figures.
Location of Moscow Real Estate Assets
The real estate assets facing potential seizure include a three-room flat located in Yuzhnoye Butovo, a residential district in the South-Western Administrative Okrug of Moscow. The property is estimated to be worth 26 million rubles.
The second asset is a luxury home valued at 75 million rubles situated in Sinergiya, an elite gated cottage settlement located within New Moscow. Lawyers indicate that both properties remain vulnerable to legal enforcement actions by Russian authorities.
