A ferry carrying 95 people capsized in Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe, police announced, as rescue operations got underway. Police stated on their X account that the vessel was carrying 90 passengers and a five-member crew when the incident occurred.
Authorities confirmed that an unspecified number of passengers had been rescued from the water. Police added that rescue operations were ongoing and that further details about the situation would be released in due course.
Rescue operations and vessel route
The vessel, named the Mbuya Nehanda, connects the city of Kariba with several islands and fishing villages across the lake. Local media reported that the ferry capsized due to strong waves, adding that while survivors had been pulled from the water, the exact number remained unknown by Tuesday night.
Lake Kariba lies on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, more than 300 kilometers northwest of the capital Harare. It is the largest man-made lake in the world by volume.
