New Democracy spokesperson Alexandra Sdoukou told state television on Tuesday that Greek voters in upcoming elections will compare the political track records of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Alexis Tsipras, and Nikos Androulakis.
Speaking on ERTNews, Sdoukou said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will announce a series of economic measures at the Thessaloniki International Fair in two weeks. She emphasized that the government aims to ensure that national economic progress delivers tangible benefits to employees, retirees, and self-employed professionals across the country.
New Democracy is the ruling center-right political party in Greece, led by Mitsotakis since 2016. The annual Thessaloniki International Fair, held every September in Greece's second-largest city, serves as a traditional platform for prime ministers to outline government economic policy for the coming year.
Economic roadmap and global instability
Sdoukou said the upcoming economic announcements must be viewed against a backdrop of severe global instability. She cited the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, fluctuating access through the Strait of Hormuz, rising crude oil prices, and persistent global inflationary pressures.
She also pointed to the war in Ukraine entering its fifth year and an upcoming European election cycle across France, Spain, and Italy. Sdoukou said European decision-making will likely slow down as governments seek to avoid political costs during election periods. Amid these international challenges, she stated that Greece retains valuable political, economic, and fiscal stability.
The spokesperson noted that Greece has achieved an economic growth rate above the European Union average, with economic indicators improving daily despite successive international crises. However, she stressed that macroeconomic progress must translate into daily improvements in living standards for all citizens.
Ahead of the fair, Sdoukou said Mitsotakis will continue engaging directly with citizens to address their concerns regardless of their political affiliation. She explained that the prime minister intends to present a comprehensive strategic roadmap for Greece extending to 2030, focused on increasing household incomes and attracting investment.
Political contrast between opposition leaders
Sdoukou framed the political landscape ahead of the upcoming national elections, expected in a few months, as a choice between two distinct visions of Greece. She described one as the opposition's perspective, which she characterized as gloomy and negative, and the other as a view that acknowledges existing problems while recognizing countrywide progress.
According to Sdoukou, voters will evaluate three main political leaders representing three distinct proposals. Mitsotakis leads the government, while Tsipras previously served as prime minister representing the left-wing SYRIZA party, and Androulakis heads the center-left Panhellenic Socialist Movement, known as PASOK.
Critiquing the opposition, Sdoukou argued that Androulakis claims readiness to govern but opposes his own proposals if New Democracy supports them. She cited constitutional revision reforms as a key example, using a local Greek idiom to claim that Androulakis ran away from positive changes when the opportunity arose.
Turning to Tsipras, Sdoukou claimed the former prime minister had constructed a revised version of SYRIZA in an attempt to convince citizens to forget his past record and accept a new political mindset. By contrast, she asserted that Mitsotakis offers proven results, allowing him to clearly demonstrate what he inherited, what he promised, and what he accomplished during his term in office.
