Greek swimmer Alkis Kynigakis finished in eighth place in the men's 5km race at the European Open Water Swimming Championships in Paris.
The Greek champion made an impressive surge after the second kilometer and remained consistently inside the top 10 among 34 participants, of whom one failed to finish. Kynigakis reached eighth position after 3,800 meters and held the spot to the finish, recording a time of 56:02.5 in a race decided in the closing moments.
Men's Podiums and Winner Details
Germany's Florian Wellbrock won the gold medal in the men's 5km event with a time of 55:40.2, adding to his victory in the 10km race. Wellbrock is the Tokyo 2021 Olympic gold medalist and a nine time world champion.
Hungary's Dávid Betlehem earned the silver medal with a time of 55:42.6, matching his silver medal performance in the 10km event. Italian swimmer Gregorio Paltrinieri finished third to take the bronze medal in 55:44.7.
Women's 5km Event Results
In the women's 5km competition, Greek swimmer Georgia Makri finished in 18th place with a time of 1:03:43.8.
Italy's Ginevra Taddeucci won the gold medal in the women's race with a time of 1:02:31.2. Hungary's Farkas secured the silver medal in 1:02:33.4, while Italy's Pozzobon took the bronze medal with a time of 1:02:35.1.
