Bayern Munich defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-1 to claim the German Supercup at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday evening.
First-half goals from Nathaniel Brown and Michael Olise established a lead for Vincent Kompany's team before substitute Fabio Silva pulled a goal back for Dortmund late in the second half.
Bayern controlled the early stages of the match. In the 13th minute, Aleksandar Pavlovic struck a shot from the edge of the penalty area, but Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel handled the effort without difficulty. Subsequent attempts from Harry Kane and Joshua Kimmich were blocked by the Dortmund defense. Kobel was called into action again in the 18th minute when he saved a shot from Michael Olise.
The opening goal arrived in the 28th minute. Olise and Nathaniel Brown exchanged passes before Brown finished the move to give Bayern the lead.
Dortmund struggled to cope with Bayern's momentum as the visitors continued to create chances. Kobel denied Luis Diaz in the 37th minute with a save. BVB appeared to equalize in the 42nd minute when Ramy Bensebaini slid the ball into the net, but referee Daniel Schlager disallowed the goal for offside following a VAR review. Bayern doubled their lead in first-half stoppage time when Olise executed an individual solo run and scored to make it 2-0 before the break.
Second half changes and Dortmund response
Borussia Dortmund introduced summer signing Giannis Konstantelias in the second half. The Greek player immediately impacted the match and saw a 52nd-minute shot blocked by a Bayern defender. A minute later, fellow Greek arrival Konstantinos Karetsas forced a save from Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
Dortmund gradually built momentum and reduced the deficit in the 75th minute. Daniel Svensson set up Fabio Silva, and the Portuguese forward beat Neuer to make the score 2-1 and give the home side hope of a comeback. Kobel prevented Bayern from extending their advantage in the 87th minute when he saved another effort from Olise.
The closing minutes produced several key moments. In the 89th minute, Neuer made an error but recovered to block a shot from Silva. The match referee added five minutes of stoppage time, but Dortmund defender Bensebaini was sent off in the 90th minute, receiving a straight red card for a brutal foul.
Both sides had late opportunities in stoppage time. Olise missed the target in the 93rd minute, before Dortmund forward Maximilian Beier failed to convert a clear goalscoring chance a minute later. Bayern held on to secure the 2-1 victory and lift the trophy.
