Dominican runner Álvaro Abreu won the gold medal in the men's half marathon at the Central American and Caribbean Games on Sunday, setting a new competition record.
Abreu crossed the finish line in 1 hour and 2 minutes to win the 21-kilometer race. His victory gave the Dominican Republic delegation its first gold medal in athletics at the Games, which opened track and field events on Sunday.
The winning performance broke the previous Central American and Caribbean Games record held by Guatemalan runner Alberto González since the 2023 edition. González finished second on Sunday to take the silver medal with a time of 1 hour and 4 minutes, while Puerto Rican runner Héctor Pagán earned bronze in 1 hour and 5 minutes.
Women's half marathon record
In the women's division, Mexican runner Laura Galván won the gold medal with a time of 1 hour and 13 minutes. Her time established a new record for the Central American and Caribbean Games.
Galván broke the previous record held by Venezuelan runner Joselyn Brea since the 2023 Games. Fellow Mexican runner Adela Honorato won the silver medal with a time of 1 hour and 14 minutes, and Guatemalan runner Viviana Aroche secured the bronze medal.
