Former banker Andriy Onistrat has analyzed new anti-corruption agency tapes and economic risks facing Ukraine in a podcast hosted by LIGA Business.

Andriy Onistrat Warns Corruption Could Cost Ukraine War

Ukrainian serviceman and former banker Andriy Onistrat warned that Ukraine risks losing its war with Russia if high-level corruption is not curbed, speaking on the LIGA Business podcast.

His warning came during the fifth episode of the weekly series Money of War, where he analyzed newly released wiretaps from the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine regarding a major investigation codenamed Operation Forrest Gump.

The analysis examined the real scale of systemic corruption across the country and how illicit financial schemes impact Ukraine's wartime economy and overall military efforts against Russian forces. Onistrat detailed the specific methods used by figures in the Forrest Gump case to launder illicit funds through the commercial banking system, while outlining where money generated from corrupt deals is ultimately directed.

Onistrat also disclosed that he personally knows several of the individuals featured on the law enforcement wiretaps. Turning to state banking assets, the former bank chairman explained why Ukrainian authorities are currently actively communicating the planned sale of Sense Bank, a major commercial financial institution nationalized by the state during the war.

Political Debates and Election Costs

A dedicated portion of the broadcast focused on Deputy Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who recently stirred political discussion by raising the topic of future elections. Onistrat addressed whether Fedorov had made a political mistake in bringing up the issue, offered estimates on how much a full election campaign could cost, and revealed details regarding private messages he sent directly to Fedorov.

Fedorov, who leads Ukraine's Ministry of Digital Transformation, has been a key figure in the national government. Discussions surrounding potential election campaigns remain a sensitive subject in Ukraine amid ongoing military operations and martial law restrictions.

Currency Risks and Advice for Pensioners

Onistrat also evaluated macroeconomic risks facing Ukrainian households, addressing the potential devaluation of the hryvnia, the country's national currency. He provided recommendations on which foreign currencies are most suitable for holding individual savings during periods of financial instability.

For older citizens facing economic uncertainty, Onistrat outlined specific guidance on how pensioners can prepare for a potential economic crisis as the war continues to strain national financial resources.

The Money of War series is produced weekly and published on the LIGA Business YouTube channel, operated by the Kyiv news media outlet LIGA.net. Senior news editor Andriy Vodyanyi reported on the release, noting that earlier episodes remain available for viewing on YouTube and LIGA.net, along with short text summaries of the discussions.
