Greek PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis has urged the European Union to strengthen social solidarity policies to counter the electoral growth of far-right political parties across the continent. He made the call during a bilateral meeting with Iratxe Garcia Perez, the leader of the Socialists and Democrats group in the European Parliament, on Thursday, September 10, 2026. The discussions took place at the parliamentary offices of the PASOK Movement for Change group inside the Hellenic Parliament in Athens.
Androulakis stated that the meeting occurred at a challenging moment for Europe, noting that far-right political forces were securing significant polling percentages in the heart of the continent. He described the electoral gains of nationalist groups as a critical wake-up call for every democrat. Welcoming Garcia Perez as a close friend and parliamentary leader, the Greek socialist chief emphasized the urgency of a coordinated response from progressive European political families.
To counter the rise of extreme political movements, Androulakis argued that European institutions must reinforce social welfare mechanisms, particularly public healthcare and public education systems. He highlighted affordable housing policies for younger generations as an urgent priority affecting societies across Europe. In addition to domestic social investments, Androulakis stressed that European integration must encompass robust joint security and defence initiatives.
European Defense and Regional Security Strategy
Addressing regional foreign policy, Androulakis stated that Europe requires a unified strategy against potential security threats on its eastern and south-eastern borders. He explicitly cited Turkey and ongoing geopolitical challenges in the Aegean Sea and Cyprus as primary security concerns that demand collective European action. The Eastern Mediterranean remains a key area of strategic focus for Greek foreign policy, where maritime jurisdiction and island sovereignty remain sensitive issues.
Androulakis leads PASOK, historically one of Greece's primary political parties, which currently forms the main center-left opposition bloc under the PASOK Movement for Change parliamentary coalition. Prior to assuming national party leadership, Androulakis served as a Member of the European Parliament, where he worked closely within the Socialists and Democrats alliance. Garcia Perez, a Spanish politician, leads the S&D group, which represents social democratic parties across EU member states as the second-largest voting bloc in Brussels.

Meanwhile, Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias met Cypriot Defence Minister Vassilis Palmas to reaffirm that Greece and Cyprus form an axis of stability and security in the Eastern Mediterranean, while Alexandra Sdoukou noted that 44.6 percent of citizens positively evaluate recent government support measures.
