Russian technology writer Kirill Yuryev published a comprehensive set of instructions on Lenta.ru on September 28, 2026, outlining how users in Russia can register new Apple accounts across multiple operating systems.
The guide details registration methods for any user over 13 years old using iPhones, iPads, Mac computers, Windows PCs, and web browsers, while addressing tightened region switching rules and local payment limits.
An Apple account, previously known as an Apple ID, serves as the main profile required to access the App Store, iCloud, and other services on Apple devices. Registration requires an active internet connection, an accessible email address to act as the account login, and a mobile phone number capable of receiving text messages or verification calls.
Yuryev noted that users creating a Russian account can use any active email address not already bound to another Apple account. However, those planning to set their account to a foreign region should use a Google or Outlook email address. Mobile phone numbers from Russian operators remain compatible for identity confirmation.
Regarding purchases, Yuryev highlighted that mobile operators in Russia completely shut off App Store payments in April 2026. Because Russian bank cards cannot be linked to Apple accounts, funding an account has become significantly more complex, though users can still set up accounts without payment cards to access free software.
Setting up accounts on mobile devices
For brand new iPhones and iPads, initial device activation presents an option labeled Forgot password or don't have an Apple account. Selecting this option allows users to tap Create Apple Account for Free, enter their full name and date of birth, and specify an email address for verification via code. Users then set a password, choose an account region, and skip payment configuration if they only plan to use free content.
Existing mobile device users can register a new account through system settings. Within the Settings application, users navigate to the Apps section at the bottom of the menu and open the Mail app option. From there, selecting Mail Accounts and tapping Add Account brings up a list where users choose Select from list followed by iCloud.
Selecting Create new Apple account inside the popup window prompts the user to enter their full name, date of birth, and email address. The process requires creating a password, entering it twice, and verifying a mobile phone number through a text message code or phone call before accepting the user agreement and selecting a region.
Rules for changing account regions
Yuryev explained that many applications and games disappeared from the Russian App Store in 2026 due to sanctions. Users can access missing software by registering an account set to a different country, provided the software was removed by government decision rather than deleted by Apple itself.
As an example of availability differences, Yuryev stated that applications from VK and related services remain unavailable in foreign storefronts, while services such as ChatGPT can be installed. Conversely, certain applications present in the Russian App Store may be missing from foreign storefronts if local authorities in those jurisdictions blocked them.
New restrictions introduced in April 2026 tightened the rules for switching account regions. Transfers between regions are now restricted to once every 90 days, and the account balance must be set to zero before any region change can take place.
Desktop and browser registration options
On computers running macOS where account setup was skipped during initial configuration, registration remains available through System Settings. Users open settings, click Sign In at the top of the side menu, and select Don't have an account.
After entering their full name and date of birth, users specify an email address. The interface includes a toggle switch for Apple announcements that users can disable to turn gray if they prefer not to receive promotional emails. Completing the setup requires entering a password twice, confirming a phone number by text or call, accepting the agreement, and finalizing account parameters.
Windows users can set up an Apple account by installing Apple Music or Apple TV+, with Yuryev noting that Apple Music is the more widely used option. Opening Apple Music, clicking Sign In twice, and selecting Create New Apple Account opens the registration screen where users enter an email, set a password, select a country, and input their name and date of birth.
When the system prompts for a payment method on Windows, users can select None or specify a method before confirming their profile with a phone verification code. Alternatively, browser registration is available on any device, including Android smartphones, by visiting account.apple.com, selecting Create Your Apple Account in the top right corner, and providing name, birth date, country, email, and phone verification.
Creating child accounts and troubleshooting
Apple rules restrict independent account registration to users who are at least 13 years old. Yuryev advised against sharing an adult account with a child, warning that minors might accidentally alter critical settings or share personal information with scammers.
Parents can create a dedicated child account through device settings on an iPhone or Mac by tapping their name, selecting Family, tapping Continue, and choosing Create Child Account. After entering the child's name and birth date, parents complete the setup to gain access to Screen Time management and parental controls. Existing child accounts can also be added to an Apple family group, which supports up to six total members including the organizer, by tapping the user addition icon under Family settings.
Yuryev outlined five common reasons for registration failures. Weak or interrupted internet connections prevent account creation, requiring a stable network or a different access point. Using an email address already bound to another Apple account will cause the system to request a new address.
Password errors also block registration if the password is under eight characters, contains unsupported symbols, or uses simple sequences such as 12345678. Outdated iOS software can interfere with registration, requiring an operating system update or a different device. Finally, temporary Apple server outages can halt creation, in which case users must wait until servers resume normal operation, with status checkable on Apple's official website.
