A court in Yekaterinburg has sentenced a first-year university student from Equatorial Guinea to seven years in a strict regime penal colony for attempted drug trafficking.
The student had been looking for a part-time job to supplement his studies when he was intercepted by law enforcement on May 2. Police officers stopped the foreigner to conduct a routine document check. Such identity verifications are a standard police practice across Russia and frequently target visible minorities and international visitors.
During the police stop, officers searched the man and discovered he was carrying several zip-lock bags containing synthetic narcotics. The regional court press service confirmed the conviction to the Russian news outlet Lenta.ru.
Harsh drug penalties in Russia
Russia maintains some of the most severe drug enforcement laws in Europe, where even minor possession can lead to lengthy incarceration. The attempted distribution of synthetic drugs, which have become a major target for law enforcement due to their low production costs and widespread domestic circulation, carries mandatory long-term prison sentences.
The Russian penal system is primarily composed of remote labor colonies rather than traditional prisons. Strict regime facilities impose harsh living conditions, severely restricted family visits, and limited communication with the outside world. They are typically reserved for those convicted of serious crimes.
Yekaterinburg, situated in the Ural Mountains, is Russia's fourth-largest city and a major regional educational hub. Previous narcotics convictions
The sentencing follows other heavy penalties handed down by the Russian judicial system for drug-related offenses. In a separate case, a court in Moscow earlier sentenced a local resident to nine years in a strict regime colony after authorities discovered he had established a drug farm concealed within garage boxes.
