Brazil launched the Day D of its National Multivaccination Campaign on Saturday, August 22, 2026, an effort to boost vaccination coverage among children and teenagers under 15. Basic health units, known as UBSs, and other vaccination points across the country opened so families could update children's vaccination records.
The campaign offers 20 vaccines from Brazil's National Vaccination Calendar, the country's official immunization schedule set by the Ministry of Health. The vaccines protect against serious diseases including meningitis, tuberculosis and HPV-linked cancers, HPV being the human papillomavirus. The drive runs through September 1.
According to the Federal Government, this is the first edition of the campaign to include the 20-valent pneumococcal vaccine, known as Pneumo 20, which was added to the National Vaccination Calendar in June 2026. The vaccine expands protection against diseases caused by pneumococcus, including pneumonia and meningitis, and is recommended for children under 5 under the vaccination schedule.
Vaccine coverage nationwide
The Ministry of Health has distributed at least 180 million doses so far this year to ensure vaccination coverage across the country, according to the Federal Government. Vaccines against influenza, measles (the triple viral, or MMR, shot) and polio have been the most widely applied.
Depending on age, vaccination history and medical indication, the campaign offers vaccines including BCG, Hepatitis B, Penta (DTP/Hib/HB), inactivated polio (VIP), human rotavirus, 10-valent and 20-valent pneumococcal, meningococcal C, influenza, Covid-19, yellow fever, meningococcal ACWY, the triple viral shot against measles, mumps and rubella, varicella, DTP, Hepatitis A, dT, HPV4 and tetravalent dengue vaccines.
Measles response expands
The Ministry of Health has recommended expanding measles vaccination in the São Paulo state cities of São Paulo, Guarulhos and São Bernardo do Campo to cover everyone aged 6 months to 59 years.
The temporary measure was folded into the August 2026 Multivaccination Campaign after confirmed measles cases pointed to a transmission chain linked to the virus's importation into those cities.
Among the main containment strategies is the application of a so-called "dose zero" for children aged 6 to 11 months.
From the start of the measles mobilization on August 3 through August 14, more than 529,800 doses of the triple viral vaccine were applied across the three municipalities. Of that total, 87,200 doses, equivalent to 16.5% of applications, went to children aged 5 to 11.
