British cyclist Finlay Tarling has died at the age of 19 following a collision with a car during stage eight of the Volta a Portugal, according to a report by The Guardian.
The 19-year-old Welsh rider, who competed for the NSN Development Team, was traveling on the route between Melgaço and Fafe when a passenger vehicle driving in the opposite direction crossed into the path of the peloton.
The driver of the car was not associated with the official race convoy and had driven onto the course. Tarling sustained severe injuries in the crash and died at the scene before medical emergency personnel could arrive.
Following the collision, the NSN Development Team released a statement describing Tarling as a beloved member of their squad who was a son, brother and friend to many. The team expressed their grief and stated that he would be greatly missed by everyone in the sport.
Organisers of the Volta a Portugal and the Portuguese Cycling Federation offered their deepest condolences to Tarling's family and loved ones. Race officials confirmed that stage eight was stopped immediately as a mark of respect and grief.
National championship performance
Tarling was regarded as a promising talent in British road cycling. In June, he achieved a milestone in his career by finishing third in the under-23 individual time trial at the British National Championships.
The NSN Development Team focuses on nurturing young cycling talent, providing riders with competitive experience in major multi-day stage events across Europe.
The Volta a Portugal is the premier multi-day stage race in Portuguese road cycling. Stage eight was taking the peloton through northern Portugal, connecting Melgaço, a northern municipality near the Spanish border, with the city of Fafe in the District of Braga.
Death of Russian footballer Ilya Kuleshin
In a separate sports bereavement reported alongside Tarling's accident, former Russian professional footballer Ilya Kuleshin died on August 9 at the age of 25.
Kuleshin, who previously played as a defender for Russian clubs FC Arsenal Tula and FC Avangard Kursk, passed away due to complications arising from an oncological illness. FC Arsenal Tula and FC Avangard Kursk both compete within the Russian professional football league structure.
