Caroline, a 53-year-old therapist, has lost 70 lbs without relying on weight-loss injections, returning to her 1999 wedding weight of 147 lbs after identifying how post-traumatic stress from an abusive 12-year marriage hindered her body from burning fat.
Caroline realized that elevated levels of cortisol, the body's primary stress hormone, had flooded her bloodstream continuously during and after her marriage. This ongoing fight-or-flight state caused metabolic dysfunction, keeping her body in survival mode and triggering persistent cravings for high-calorie comfort foods.
Thirteen years ago, at age 40, Caroline weighed 210 lbs and wore size 14 clothing. She recalled waking up alone to the debris of family-size chip bags, dip pots, and an empty wine bottle following late-night television viewing, accompanied by acute anxiety, rapid heartbeats, and shortness of breath.
On difficult mornings, she sat on her bathroom floor and dug the sharp corner of a toothpaste tube into her upper thighs until she drew blood, using physical pain to distract from feelings of being a "fat, worthless, 40-year-old single mother who had made a total mess of her life."
Caroline first met her former husband in the late 1990s while both were working as cabin crew. He was two years older and previously divorced, showering her with gifts and having her name tattooed on his body after three months of dating.

The couple married in 1999 when Caroline was 26. However, during her 2003 pregnancy with her son William, her husband began displaying severe mood swings, starting arguments over the timing or topic of phone calls while he traveled overseas.
Following William's birth, her husband resented the infant taking focus away from him. He persuaded Caroline to leave her job as a podiatrist to focus on motherhood, which she later recognized as a control tactic. Struggling with fatigue and strained nerves, she turned to fast food for comfort, wore baggy grey sweatshirts, and slept in a separate room from her husband.
Despite living in a four-bedroom detached house without lavish expenses, her husband secretly accumulated roughly $95,000 in debt. The couple attempted to expand their family, but Caroline suffered four unexplained miscarriages before becoming pregnant with her daughter Madeleine in 2008.
Discovery of Infidelity and Narcissism
When six months pregnant with Madeleine, Caroline answered her husband's ringing mobile phone while he ate lunch with their son, hearing a voicemail from an American woman asking about her "lovely 'English guy'". Upon confrontation, he accused her of acting like a "mad woman" and insisted it was a wrong number.
After he handed her his wallet claiming he had nothing to hide, Caroline discovered a business card for a Chicago motel. She telephoned the motel and confirmed a cancelled reservation under his name. When cornered, her husband claimed he sought support from another woman due to feeling helpless during her miscarriages, leading Caroline to comfort him instead.

The couple entered marriage counselling, where her husband presented himself as the victim and implied Caroline caused their marital issues. During a private session, the therapist saw through his behavior and advised Caroline to research the term "narcissistic sociopath", helping her understand how he projected insecurity through emotional manipulation.
Feeling trapped due to financial dependency and depression, Caroline remained in the home until 2010, when the children were aged two and six. Her husband disappeared for three hours on the morning of a family camping trip and vanished periodically during the holiday. Upon returning home, Caroline issued an ultimatum, and he packed his belongings and left within 10 minutes, later accidentally sending her an intimate text message intended for another woman.
Financial Repossession and Health Decline
Following the separation, Caroline developed post-traumatic stress disorder, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, a heart condition, anxiety, and depression. She was prescribed six counselling sessions by her doctor but attended three.
Although her former husband stated the house "was mine", Caroline lacked the income for mortgage payments or legal fees to manage the sale. The property was repossessed due to the $95,000 debt left in her name, leaving her homeless.
Caroline moved into a small rental property with her children, requiring her father to act as a guarantor. She relied on welfare programs and picked up coins from the street when down to her last dollar. Over three years, she paid off the debt by resuming work as a podiatrist and starting a secondary business selling healthcare products.

Career Pivot and Professional Success
Recognizing a shortage of professionals who understood narcissistic abuse from a victim's perspective, Caroline used her earnings to retrain as a therapist. In 2024, she founded the Mental Wellbeing Company, launched the podcast No Visible Bruises, which garnered over six million downloads, and published her book, How to Heal After Narcissistic Abuse.
In 2018, Caroline married Simon, a 56-year-old mortgage broker she met online. Her children had no further contact with their father by their own choice; William trained as a family law attorney, while Madeleine completed her A-levels to study psychology at university.
Metabolic Reset and Weight Loss Protocol
Despite her professional accomplishments, Caroline continued to carry 70 lbs of excess weight and wore size 12 to 14 baggy clothing. During a 2023 trip to Las Vegas at age 50, feeling uncomfortable in the heat prompted her to consult a nutritionist regarding trauma and weight retention.
Her nutritionist explained that living in constant fight-or-flight kept her nervous system dysregulated, causing her body to prioritize survival by suppressing digestive, immune, and endocrine functions. Routine exercise flooded her bloodstream with additional cortisol, increasing hunger and calorie storage.
Caroline implemented a fat adaptation diet combined with nervous system regulation to identify emotional distress triggers. The dietary protocol involved periodic calorie restriction, starting at 600 calories per day before increasing to 700 calories, prompting her metabolism to adapt and burn energy from fat reserves.
On 600-calorie days, she fasted until lunchtime, eating a chicken and avocado salad for lunch and salmon with vegetables for dinner. She prioritized high-protein foods such as eggs, fish, and Greek yoghurt while reducing carbohydrates. Although her body initially stored calories and caused weight gain before stabilizing, she successfully shed 70 lbs, returning to 147 lbs and eliminating all medical diagnoses, including IBS.
Today, Caroline consumes approximately 1,800 calories daily and exercises using a home rebounder and reformer Pilates machine. She holds no anger toward her former husband, attributing her physical recovery to addressing stress at a nervous system level.
