Global song streams for country music legend Dolly Parton surged by more than 1,260 percent on Swedish streaming platform Spotify following her death on Tuesday at the age of 80.
Streams of her famous tracks Jolene and 9 to 5 climbed by 630 percent worldwide, according to a statement issued on Wednesday by the digital streaming service and reported by trade publication The Hollywood Reporter. In the United States alone, overall listening to her music catalogue jumped by 2,320 percent.
Seven of Parton's songs entered the daily chart of the platform's most popular tracks on Tuesday. Jolene and 9 to 5 reached the number two and number three spots on the daily rankings.
Spotify, which is based in Stockholm, Sweden, is one of the world's largest digital music services. The massive surge in listening reflects the global reaction to the loss of one of country music's most celebrated figures.
Passing of Country Music Icon
The country music legend died on Tuesday following a brief battle with cancer. Her nephew and chief of security, Bryan Seaver, announced her death in a video published on her official Instagram account, fulfilling a personal request from Parton that the news be shared in that manner.
Four days before her death, the singer was admitted to a hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, for kidney and autoimmune problems, according to reporting by TMZ magazine. Nashville is widely recognized as the historic home and capital of the country music industry.
On the same day she was hospitalized, Parton acknowledged to People magazine that she was experiencing difficult health issues, though she assured the publication that she still had many things left to do.
Concerns over her health first surfaced in September 2025, when Parton announced the postponement of a series of concerts scheduled for December at Caesars Palace, the resort hotel and casino on the Las Vegas Strip. Those performances were ultimately cancelled several months later.
Her health issues also prevented her from attending the Governors Awards ceremony hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization behind the Oscars. Parton received an honorary Oscar at the ceremony, accepting the award through a pre-recorded video message.
