César Gastélum shot dead during live stream in Mexico

Mexican content creator César Gastélum has been shot dead at point-blank range during a live stream in Culiacán, Sinaloa, authorities said. The 25-year-old influencer, widely known online as Cesarín, was attacked on Tuesday night while filming a social media video with two friends outside a fast-food outlet.

Gastélum, who had amassed nearly 600,000 followers on TikTok, was broadcasting live on the streaming platform Kick when the shooting occurred. He and his companions were participating in a food delivery challenge in front of a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in the Desarrollo Urbano Tres Ríos district, situated just a few metres from the State Attorney General's Office.

All three men were dressed in the distinctive orange uniforms worn by delivery app drivers while waiting for a food order outside the restaurant. Although the atmosphere during the broadcast was initially lighthearted and full of jokes, tension mounted when a motorcycle passed by the group.

Fatal shooting captured on live stream

As the motorcycle passed, one of Gastélum's companions voiced concern during the live broadcast, noting that the vehicle made him feel uneasy. Another friend agreed, saying that the young men on the motorcycle frightened him.

Minutes later, the same motorcycle returned carrying two men. Just before the attack took place, one of the companions shouted out in terror as the motorcycle driver drew a handgun and opened fire directly at Gastélum.

Gastélum was struck at close range and died from his injuries. His two companions were not physically harmed during the attack, though they witnessed the murder unfold while the live stream continued to broadcast online.

Federal investigation into potential motive

Following the killing, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that federal and state authorities are working in close coordination to investigate the crime, identify the gunmen, and establish the motive behind the attack.

Mexico's Federal Security Cabinet stated that investigators are examining Gastélum's social media activity as part of their inquiries. Several of his past posts reportedly made reference to a faction of an organized crime group operating in the region.

Law enforcement officials are also reviewing footage from nearby security surveillance cameras and gathering physical evidence from the crime scene near the state prosecutor's office to trace the suspects.

Social media presence and Sinaloa culture

Gastélum, a native of Sinaloa, built his online popularity through comedy sketches, parodies, and posts showcasing his lifestyle. A couple of years prior to his death, he launched a podcast titled Al Estilo Culiacán, which he described as the most warlike show in the region.

In common with several other influencers from Sinaloa, Gastélum frequently featured luxury cars, ranches, designer clothing, and expensive jewellery in his content. Such displays are closely linked with the lifestyle imagery surrounding drug trafficking culture in northwestern Mexico.

Several months before the fatal shooting, Gastélum had announced plans to reduce his social media activity following the death of his father, stating that he intended to focus on pursuing a career in music. Despite the announcement, he continued to host live streams and upload content until his death. Following news of his murder, fans, friends, and fellow content creators flooded his social media accounts with messages of condolence.

Parallel murder of Mexican influencer

The murder of Gastélum has drawn immediate comparisons to the death of Mexican influencer Valeria Márquez, who was also killed during a live stream the previous year. Márquez was shot dead by a gunman while broadcasting live from inside her beauty salon, a crime later confirmed by Mexican prosecutors.

Both high-profile killings have reignited national debate across Mexico regarding the personal safety of digital content creators and the broader impact of cartel-related violence, as law enforcement agencies continue their investigations into both cases.
