Sport Boys midfielder Christian Cueva has denied any feud with Renato Tapia and called for his fellow player to be recalled to the Peru national team. Speaking in an interview on the program Nada Que No Sepa, Cueva broke his silence regarding recent controversy between the two players over their differing views on the state of Peruvian football.
Cueva explained that he and Tapia held a brief conversation following their exchange of public statements to clear up any misunderstanding. He emphasized that differences of opinion should not be treated as a personal conflict, adding that there was never any enmity between them. Cueva stated that neither player had caused harm to Peruvian football or the national team, pointing out that both have delivered moments of joy to the national side.
Addressing Tapia's potential return to the team known as the Bicolor, Cueva praised Tapia as a great player and described him as an important figure within the squad. Cueva said Tapia has earned his place in the national team alongside other established players, while adding that he expects to recover his own position in the team soon.
National team call-ups and upcoming friendly
Tapia has been left out of recent national team squad selections made by head coach Mano Menezes. Cueva is also working to regain his spot in the national team as part of the new process under Menezes.
The Peru national team will play its next match against the United States in an international friendly. The fixture is scheduled for Saturday, September 26 at 3:30 p.m. Peruvian time at Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando, Florida.
