An e-scooter explosion is suspected to have triggered a fire that injured 11 people in A Coruña, Spain, early Sunday. Firefighters confirmed the suspected cause to the 112 Galicia emergency service.
The blaze broke out at 2 a.m. on the first floor of a building at number 15 Calle Nicomedes Pastor Díaz, on the corner with Calle Nóvoa Santos, between the Cuatro Caminos and Parque Europa areas. Five fire crews responded, along with Local and National Police officers and the emergency health service Urxencias Sanitarias-061. Smoke spread rapidly through the building’s stairwells, prompting the organized evacuation of all residents.
Two admitted to burns unit
All 11 injured were taken to the emergency department of the Complejo Hospitalario Universitario de A Coruña (CHUAC). According to hospital sources, two were admitted to the burns unit with smoke inhalation and wounds of varying severity. The remaining nine were kept under observation with a reserved prognosis.
Firefighters checked every floor apartment by apartment before allowing residents to return. Authorities considered using the nearby Forum Metropolitano civic centre for temporary rehousing, but that proved unnecessary. Residents were back in their homes by around 6 a.m., once firefighting and ventilation work was complete.
Damage to the building was visible on Sunday morning. First-floor windows had blown out, exposing part of one room, and the second-floor window was also damaged. Two rooms on the affected floor were completely gutted. Fire crews inspected the facade twice during the morning to remove debris at risk of falling onto the street.
