Eleven people were injured early Sunday when a fire broke out on the first floor of an apartment building on Nicomedes Pastor Diaz street in A Coruña, Spain, forcing the evacuation of all residents.
The fire started at around 2 a.m. and spread smoke through the rest of the building via the stairwells, according to emergency services. Authorities ordered a precautionary evacuation while firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze and ventilate the building.
All eleven people affected were treated at the scene by medical staff. Nine of them required transfer to the Complejo Hospitalario Universitario de La Coruña (CHUAC). Emergency service 112 Galicia said none of the cases were serious.
Firefighters told 112 Galicia that the fire may have originated from an electric scooter inside the first-floor apartment where the blaze began. Two rooms in that apartment were burned out and other areas were damaged by smoke, which residents reported spread rapidly through the building.
The emergency response involved units from 061 medical services, the A Coruña fire brigade, and both local and national police. Multiple calls to the emergency line allowed operators to pinpoint the location and activate response protocols.
Despite the evacuation order, callers told the emergency dispatch center that there were many people affected. By around 6 a.m. Sunday, residents who had been evacuated were able to return to their homes.
