Remco Evenepoel became the all-time record winner of the Clásica de San Sebastián on Saturday, beating Richard Carapaz in a two-man sprint to claim his fourth title at the race in its 45-year history.
The Belgian overcame a mechanical failure on the Erlaitz climb, where he lost more than half a minute to a leading group of around ten riders that included Carapaz. He rejoined the front group before the final Murgil climb, where his team drove the pace before he attacked.
Only Carapaz could follow. Evenepoel launched his sprint with around 300 metres to go, and although Carapaz got onto his wheel, he could not pass. Ben Tullet completed the podium, while a group of around 25 riders finished 29 seconds back, with Pello Bilbao taking fifth.
The victory surpasses the record of Marino Lejarreta, who won the race three times between 1981 and 1987. Evenepoel is also a double world champion and Olympic champion.
