Georgia Despollari broke Greece's 21-year-old national record in the women's 800 meters at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. The 23-year-old athlete completed the race in 1:59.29 to eclipse the previous national mark of 1:59.79, set by Maria Papadopoulou on June 14, 2005.
Despollari, who is coached by Michalis Anagnostou, had spent two years pursuing the 800-meter national record and target of running under two minutes. Before her performance at Alexander Stadium, she had faced difficulty gaining entry into major meetings, where organizers often select athletes with entry times under 1:58. Tactical errors had also previously prevented her from demonstrating her full potential.
Race at Alexander Stadium
During the race at Alexander Stadium, Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson and French runner Renelle Lamote, who finished fifth at the Olympic Games, helped set the pace. Hodgkinson passed 400 meters in 57.27 seconds and 600 meters in 1:27.60 before winning the race in 1:57.28 to cheers from the crowd.
Despollari tracked the leaders from seventh position throughout the run. She avoided getting boxed in at any point and launched a sprint down the home straight to finish sixth in her heat. The scoreboard confirmed her time of 1:59.29 next to her name.
Semi-Final Qualification
Despollari missed out on qualification for the semi-finals after recording the seventh-fastest time among runners who finished outside the top three in their heat. Under the competition rules, four non-automatic qualifiers advanced to the semi-finals alongside the top three finishers from each heat.
Despite missing the semi-finals, her record-breaking run showed that persistence and effort are rewarded and indicated that her best days remain ahead.
