The test firing from the F125-type NATO warship represents a potential new long-range strike capability for Germany's surface fleet if the weapon is adopted into service.
The LOng-Range Artillery Missile system, known as LORA, was developed by Israeli defense firm Israel Aircraft Industries. Israel Aircraft Industries is a major aerospace and defense contractor based in Israel that produces military aircraft, drones, and precision weapon systems.
The Sachsen-Anhalt is an F125 Baden-Wuerttemberg-class frigate serving in the German Navy. Frigates are warships built for maritime escort, patrol, and air defense duties. Within the NATO defense alliance, European surface fleets have historically depended on conventional naval artillery and shorter-range tactical missiles. Adding operational-tactical ballistic weapons would substantially increase long-range strike options for naval commanders.
LORA missile specifications and precision
The LORA is a single-stage solid-fuel ballistic missile engineered for precision strikes against high-value targets. According to technical specifications provided in the publication, the missile has an operational range of 100 to 430 kilometres and weighs 1,600 kilograms.
The weapon operates along a quasi-ballistic trajectory. A quasi-ballistic flight path remains at a lower altitude than traditional parabolic ballistic trajectories, enabling the missile to perform inflight adjustments and make radar tracking more difficult for defensive systems.
The missile maintains a circular error probable of 10 metres. Circular error probable is a standard measurement of military accuracy that defines the radius of a circle within which half of launched projectiles are expected to land. A 10-metre threshold allows the weapon to hit pinpoint targets, such as fortified positions, command posts, and key logistics infrastructure.
Combat history in Nagorno-Karabakh
The test aboard the German frigate marks a new naval role for a missile system that has previously seen combat action on land. In October 2020, reports noted that Azerbaijan used the LORA operational-tactical missile complex for the first time during military operations.
In that strike, an Azerbaijani LORA missile destroyed a bridge over the Akar River. The strategic bridge served as a critical transport link connecting Armenia and the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.
