Tournament hosts Turkey defeated Germany in four sets in front of 15,000 fans to claim the final spot in the semi-finals of the Women's European Volleyball Championship.
The Turkish side secured a 3-1 victory, rebounding from a second-set stumble to eliminate a German side that had hoped to cause a major upset against the defending champions.
Turkey entered the quarter-final match as heavy favourites. Not only did they have home advantage, but the team arrived as the defending champions of the tournament and the winners of this year's Nations League. In contrast, Germany finished 12th in the Nations League and had been eliminated in the round of 16 in the previous two editions of the European Championship.
The two sides had already met in the group stage of the competition, with Turkey emerging victorious on that occasion with a 3-1 win. Their paths to the quarter-finals were also contrasting, as Turkey comfortably defeated Azerbaijan in the round of 16, while Germany needed a tie-break to overcome Belgium.
Hosts dominate early stages
The first set proceeded exactly as the local public anticipated, with the Turkish team quickly establishing a dominant 9-3 lead.
Key contributions came from Melissa Vargas, who scored eight points, and Ilkin Aydin, who added seven. While the German team managed to close the gap to two points at one stage, the squad coached by Daniele Santarelli finished the set strongly to win 25-18.
However, the start of the second set shocked the home audience. Germany put together a six-point scoring run at the very beginning of the set and, aided by a strong performance from Lena Kindermann, maintained a safe lead.
Turkey only managed to close the deficit to two points on one occasion, but immediately lost five of the next six rallies. Germany ultimately took the set 25-22 to level the match score.
Turkey regain control
The dropped set spurred the hosts into action. Turkey took complete control of the third set, capitalising heavily on German errors.
The visitors gave away eight points through their own mistakes, allowing Turkey to build and constantly extend a large lead. The third set ended as a mirror image of the first, with Turkey winning 25-18.
The fourth set proved to be the most fiercely contested of the match. Turkey repeatedly built three or four-point leads, only for their rivals to stay in contention for a long time.
Successful attacks and serves from Vargas were consistently matched by effective German counter-attacks following strong defensive plays. The visitors eventually managed to level the set score, tying the game at 16-16 following a long and chaotic rally.
Semi-final line-up confirmed
The hosts then regained the initiative. A series of brilliant serves from Hande Baladin allowed Turkey to re-establish a five-point cushion.
Despite fighting until the end in an attempt to force a tie-break, the German team could not close the gap. Turkey won the set 25-22 to secure the match and book their place in the medal zone.
The victory completes the semi-final line-up for the European Championship. Turkey will now face Serbia in their match for a place in the grand final.
In the other semi-final, Poland, who secured their progression with a victory over the Netherlands a few hours earlier, will play against Italy, the reigning world champions from a year ago.
