Google has launched Gmail Live, a new voice feature allowing users to converse directly with their email inbox to locate information without typing search queries.
The feature was first introduced at the annual Google I/O developers conference in May and relies on Gemini voice models to interpret natural language questions.
Google explained that the system searches through received messages, delivers a spoken summary answer, and simultaneously displays the relevant emails on the device screen.
Among the examples provided by Google, users can ask for the boarding gate of an upcoming flight or inquire about scheduled school activities for the week.

Conversational search and follow-up questions
The interaction does not stop after an initial response from the voice assistant. Users can ask follow-up questions to delve deeper into their inbox contents.
In addition, users can interrupt Gmail Live while it is speaking to change the topic of conversation. Google stated that the goal is to make finding specific information feel more like asking another person rather than using a traditional email search bar.
Gmail, which Google launched in April 2004, has grown to become one of the world's most widely used webmail services, offering extensive search capabilities across user message archives.
Expansion to Google Docs and Keep
Google is also expanding this conversational voice mode to Google Docs and Google Keep through new features named Docs Live and Keep Live.
Docs Live enables users to speak aloud to transform their ideas into structured documents. With user permission, Docs Live can draw information from Gmail, Google Drive, Google Chat, and the wider web.
Keep Live interprets spoken text from the user and automatically converts the dictation into organized notes or task lists.
Google Docs and Google Keep are part of Google Workspace, a suite of cloud-based productivity and collaboration tools used by millions of individuals and businesses globally.
Global rollout and subscription requirements
Google has initiated a global rollout of the new capabilities, making Gmail Live available to users in Spain and other international regions.
However, the company noted several limitations during the initial release phase. Gmail Live currently operates only in English, is restricted to mobile devices, and requires a paid subscription to Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra.
Google is expanding availability progressively throughout this week, meaning the update may not immediately appear across all compatible accounts.
Docs Live is reserved for subscribers to the Google AI Pro and Ultra tiers. Google added that these conversational voice features will also arrive for Google Workspace business customers in the near future.
