The Greece women's national volleyball team defeated France 3-0 in Brno, Czech Republic, to advance to the European Volleyball Championship quarterfinals on Sunday.
Head coach Apostolos Oikonomou saw his team deliver a commanding performance in the round of 16 match, taking a straight-sets victory with set scores of 25-16, 25-18, and 25-20.
Greece entered the knockout match as the underdog against a French team that had qualified second in its group. However, the Greek players dominated from the opening set and gave their opponents no opportunity to establish a rhythm.
Match dominance and injury setback
The victory was achieved despite a setback near the end of the second set, when Greek player Bakodimou suffered an injury and was forced to leave the court with assistance.
Despite losing Bakodimou at a crucial stage of the contest, the team maintained its tactical discipline and closed out the second set before securing the third set to complete the sweep.
The win was described as a nearly perfect match by the Greek squad, who neutralised France's attacking threats throughout the three sets.
Tournament context and opposition
France had reached the knockout round after finishing second in their initial group behind Italy, one of the primary favourites to win the European Championship.
The European Volleyball Championship is organised biennially by the European Volleyball Confederation, bringing together top national teams across the continent. Brno, the second-largest city in the Czech Republic, is hosting matches during the knockout phase of the tournament.
Upcoming quarterfinal fixture
Greece will play their quarterfinal match on Wednesday, September 2, facing the winner of the round of 16 tie between Serbia and Croatia.
Serbia and Croatia are set to meet in their own knockout fixture to determine who will advance to face Oikonomou's team in the last eight.
