The Greek government is considering extending its pump subsidy on diesel fuel after retail prices surpassed 2 euros per liter across Greece.
Millions of citizens returning from summer holidays are struggling with elevated fuel costs, prompting business groups to warn that sustained transport expenses could trigger broader price increases for basic goods and services.
Michalis Kiousis, president of the Panhellenic Federation of Gas Station Owners, warned that keeping diesel prices at elevated levels could cause chain price hikes throughout the economy. Reporting by public broadcaster ERT noted that Kiousis recalled previous government subsidies of 20 cents per liter in April and May, followed by 15 cents per liter in June, as he called for a similar intervention.
The government has also completed payments for separate social support measures, depositing 11.93 million euros in emergency aid worth 150 euros per child for eligible families.
Refinery Prices and Market Trends
Data from domestic refineries indicates that lower international Brent crude prices are beginning to filter into the Greek retail market. Refinery prices for diesel dropped from 1.46 euros per liter on August 25 to 1.41 euros, while unleaded gasoline remained steady at 1.49 euros per liter.
Gas station owners estimate that the refinery price cuts will reach retail pumps over the weekend, bringing diesel costs below 2 euros per liter. Brent crude serves as the major international benchmark for European oil transactions.
Alongside fuel developments, the Ministry of National Economy and Finance and the Independent Authority for Public Revenue completed a 12 million euro child allowance payout for children born in 2025 and 2026.
European Demand and Island Price Gaps
Nikos Papageorgiou, president of the Attica Gas Station Owners and Fuel Traders Association, noted that diesel reacts more rapidly than gasoline to international Brent fluctuations during both price rises and drops. Attica is the administrative region surrounding the capital city of Athens.
Papageorgiou explained that winter demand has not yet picked up in Central and Northern Europe, where fuel consumption will rise as industrial activity, transport, and home heating needs increase in the coming months.
Meanwhile, Greek tax authorities have placed cryptocurrency earnings under scrutiny, blocking a 620,323.34 euro crypto profit declared by a taxpayer following an asset transfer review.
Despite recent wholesale drops, average national retail prices remain high at 2.03 euros per liter for unleaded gasoline and 2.04 euros per liter for diesel. Prices are even steeper in island regions, reaching up to 2.28 euros per liter in some locations.
Broader economic data from the Bank of Greece showed household bank deposits increased by 240 million euros in July 2026, while total loans to households declined over the same period.
