Polish player Iga Swiatek defeated Ukraine's Marta Kostiuk 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the fourth round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto. Swiatek had lost just six games across her first two matches in Toronto, beating Sara Bejlek of the Czech Republic 6-0, 6-3 and Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland 6-2, 6-1. The victory advanced Swiatek to the quarter-finals, where she will face either Jessica Pegula of the United States or Diana Shnaider of Russia.
Kostiuk had previously eliminated Swiatek from Roland Garros in the fourth round, winning 7-5, 6-1 in a match Swiatek lost in disastrous style. In Toronto, Swiatek broke Kostiuk's serve at the first opportunity, despite Kostiuk having saved all 10 break points in her previous match against Madison Keys. Kostiuk broke Swiatek right back in the next game.
Both players struggled on serve early, with Kostiuk losing serve again before Swiatek surrendered her own. Kostiuk attacked Swiatek's second serve, saved a break point in the fifth game, and held a two-game lead to win the set 6-3 after saving four break points in the ninth game. Swiatek won just nine percent of points on her first serve in the opening set, winning one out of 11 rallies, as Kostiuk anticipated shot directions and took more risks.
Turnaround in Toronto
Swiatek took a bathroom break before the second set, returned to hold serve, and broke Kostiuk to build a 3-0 lead while saving three break points. Kostiuk began making more errors, failed to break Swiatek in the second set, and lost the set 6-1 as Swiatek took control.
Swiatek broke Kostiuk immediately in the third set and broke her again to take a 4-1 lead. Kostiuk was angry with her play, gestured animatedly during a game break, and repeatedly received advice from her coach, Sandra Zaniewska.
Kostiuk had two break points in the eighth game to reach 3-5, but Swiatek held firm. Swiatek missed five match points before converting on her sixth attempt to complete the three-set victory.
