Russian ballistic missiles struck Kyiv overnight on Sunday while separate missile and drone attacks killed one person and injured six others in Kryvyi Rih.
Explosions echoed across the Ukrainian capital as air defense alarms sounded around 3:00 a.m. local time, according to an Agence France-Presse reporter on the ground.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko warned residents on Telegram shortly before 3:00 a.m. that the capital was coming under ballistic missile attack and instructed everyone to remain inside emergency shelters.
Klitschko and the Kyiv military administration confirmed that emergency crews were battling fires in two city districts, Obolonskyi and Holosiivskyi. The military administration reported one person injured as of 3:35 a.m., moments after the citywide air raid alarm was officially lifted.
In Kryvyi Rih, an industrial city in central Ukraine where President Volodymyr Zelensky grew up, Russian forces launched a combined attack using missiles and drones that hit two industrial facilities.
Oleksandr Hanza, the governor of the surrounding Dnipropetrovsk region, reported that one person died and six others were injured during the strike.
Drone attacks over Moscow
Across the border, Russian air defense units intercepted nearly 100 Ukrainian drones targeting Moscow during the same overnight hours, according to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin.
Sobyanin issued a series of updates on Telegram and the MAX social network between 3:00 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., stating that the incoming drones were brought down before reaching the capital.
The exchange of strikes follows months of escalating aerial warfare four and a half years after the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, marking the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II.
Escalating civilian toll
Russia launched a record number of missiles against Ukraine in June, according to an Agence France-Presse analysis of daily reports from the Ukrainian Air Force.
The increase in bombardments comes as Kyiv presses US President Donald Trump to supply additional ammunition for Ukraine's Patriot air defense systems.
Recent figures from the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine show that last month was the deadliest for civilians since May 2022, with 437 people killed and 2,610 injured nationwide.
Kyiv suffered high casualties during the wave of attacks, recording 54 deaths and 202 injuries as Russian forces launched massive bombardments with ballistic and cruise missiles.
Since the beginning of the year, the UN mission has recorded 12,477 civilian casualties in Ukraine, including 1,839 deaths and 10,638 injuries. The total represents a 44 percent increase compared to the same period last year and is more than double the number recorded in 2024.
In response to ongoing Russian strikes, Ukrainian armed forces have intensified their own long-range drone attacks against targets inside Russia.
