Lech Poznań manager Niels Frederiksen reflects on Poland

Lech Poznań manager Niels Frederiksen has delivered an assessment of his life in Poland, describing Poznań as similar to a Western European city during an interview with Danish media.

Speaking to the Danish website 3point.dk, the experienced head coach said that Poland had developed significantly over the last 10 years and now differed greatly from the country during communist times, although its culture remained distinct from Western Europe.

Frederiksen noted that while children in Denmark aged eight to 14 closely follow players from the Premier League, the Bundesliga, and world football in general, young supporters in Poland are focused almost entirely on the domestic Ekstraklasa league and are deeply fascinated by it.

A translation of the interview was published on social media platform X by user Lego Futbol, who noted that the Danish coach gave his comments before the Polish Super Cup.

Title success and European campaign

Frederiksen is currently in his third season leading Lech Poznań, having enjoyed strong initial success with the club. His first two campaigns in Poznań ended with two championship titles for the side, who are widely known by the nickname Kolejorz.

Despite their domestic achievements, Frederiksen has found European competitions more challenging. Lech Poznań were recently eliminated from the Champions League qualifiers by Danish outfit Aarhus, despite securing an impressive 4-1 victory in the first leg away from home.

The team has maintained good form in the domestic league since that defeat and still has an opportunity to reach the league phase of the Europa League. They will host Swiss side FC Thun at Bułgarska Street in the Greater Poland capital on Thursday, August 20, for the first leg of their fourth-round qualifier.

Should Lech Poznań fail to advance past Thun, the club is already guaranteed a place in the league phase of the Conference League for the coming season.
