French swimmer Leon Marchand claimed the first European title of his career by winning the 200m butterfly final at the European Swimming Championships in Paris on Saturday, August 15.
The 24-year-old Olympic champion delivered the fastest performance in the world this year, winning in a time of one minute 51.72 seconds to secure France's first individual gold medal of their home championship.
Marchand finished comfortably ahead of Hungarian swimmer Richard Marton, who took silver in a time of 1:54.60, and Greek swimmer Apostolos Siskos, who picked up the bronze medal in 1:54.13.
The race featured an intense duel over the opening 150 metres between Marchand and his training partner Hubert Kos. Kos, who competes for Hungary, trains alongside Marchand in the United States under renowned head coach Bob Bowman, the former mentor of 23-time Olympic champion Michael Phelps. Kos matched Marchand through the first three lengths before fading on the final lap, allowing the French swimmer to break away and touch the wall first.
Race breakdown and post-match reaction
Speaking after the race, Marchand said it was a great moment and that he would remember the victory for a long time. He praised the intense atmosphere inside the arena and noted that racing side by side with his training partner Kos made the contest particularly memorable.
Analyzing his split times, Marchand said his final 50 metres felt exceptionally strong, describing it as his best closing length in a long time. However, he noted that finishing so strongly indicated he might have had enough energy to set a quicker pace over the earlier stages of the race.
Despite his status as a quadruple Olympic champion following his dominant displays at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, as well as a seven-time world champion, the swimmer from Toulouse had never previously won an individual title at the European Swimming Championships. His victory came despite entering the tournament with a scaled-back race schedule, having suffered an adductor injury during the French Championships leading into the event.
Relay medal and upcoming 400m freestyle
The 200m butterfly victory provided Marchand with his second medal of the championships, having already anchored the French squad to a silver medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay earlier in the competition.
Marchand will complete his European Championships campaign on Sunday's final day of racing by taking on a new discipline. He is scheduled to test his potential in the 400m freestyle, an event he has not previously explored at the highest level of international competition.
