Dominican sprinter Liranyi Alonso won the women's 100-meter gold medal at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026 on August 3. The 20-year-old athlete from La Vega set a new event record at the Estadio Olímpico Félix Sánchez by crossing the finish line in 11.10 seconds.
Alonso broke the previous tournament mark of 11.14 seconds set by Bahamian sprinter Chandra Sturrup at the Maracaibo 1998 games. The historic record had stood untouched in the record book for nearly three decades until Alonso competed before a cheering home crowd in Santo Domingo.
The Dominican athlete generated a powerful reaction from the starting blocks to take the lead in the first 30 meters. She maintained a strong pace and a fluid stride through the final acceleration stretch, pulling away from the field to complete a solo finish.
Race Medalists and Career Milestones
Gladymar Torres of Puerto Rico earned the silver medal after completing the sprint in 11.22 seconds. Yarima García of Cuba took the bronze medal with a time of 11.32 seconds.
The victory reflects Alonso's continued progress on the international stage. She won the Junior Pan American championship title in 2025 before making her debut at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo later that year.
Following her victory lap around the track with the national flag over her shoulders, Alonso said that presenting the gold medal to her country in front of her family and her people gave her an indescribable sense of pride.
