Meteorologist Mercedes Martín has called for urgent adaptation of cities, housing, and work schedules in Spain to cope with increasingly severe summer heat.
Speaking in an interview with National Geographic España, Martín said societies must prepare for harsher summers while reducing emissions to prevent worse climate outcomes. She warned that rising temperatures are already affecting public health, schools, water resources, agriculture, and urban design.

According to figures cited by Martín, Spain has warmed by roughly 1.8 degrees Celsius since the 1960s. Summer temperature increases are approaching two degrees Celsius over the same period. In addition, heatwaves in the country now last about three days longer per decade.
Martín stated that longer heatwaves increase cumulative exposure, especially when high nighttime minimum temperatures prevent proper sleep and recovery. She noted that single weather events do not predict a full season, but fit into a clear underlying trend.
Urban Adaptation and Building Insulation
The meteorologist emphasized that purchasing air conditioning cannot solve the crisis on its own. Climate technician Carlos Llull noted that the main problem is the amount of heat entering a home. Industry experts also agree that six out of ten people in Spain use air conditioning less than they would prefer.
Adapting cities requires planting more vegetation, creating shaded areas, altering construction materials, and protecting people working outdoors in direct sunlight. Buildings must also stop heat from entering before relying on cooling systems. Less known settings on cooling units can lower electricity bills, but cannot fix poorly insulated structures.
Work and school schedules must adapt to human thermal limits. Martín said warning systems, support for vulnerable populations, and cool refuge centers should activate before medical emergencies overload hospitals.
Climate Inertia and Long Term Impacts
Martín warned that climate system inertia means accumulated warming will not reverse quickly because oceans have absorbed huge amounts of heat. As a result, Spain may continue to warm over coming decades even if greenhouse gas emissions drop.
However, actions taken today will determine conditions during the second half of the century. Temperature differences between 1.5, two, or three degrees will dictate the frequency of extreme days, water pressure, conditions favoring wildfires, and health impacts.
Martín explained that adaptation protects against inevitable impacts, while mitigation prevents worse outcomes. She compared the two strategies to cooling an indoor space while simultaneously stopping heat from getting inside.
Changing Climate Communication and Daily Habits
The meteorologist called for a change in how climate change is communicated. She warned that constant alarmism can saturate the public and prevent concrete action. Communication should instead connect climate data with everyday choices in transport, energy, urban planning, business, and daily life.
At home, maintaining health requires staying hydrated, sleeping well, and recognizing symptoms of heat exhaustion. Martín advised against directing cold airflow directly at the body during the night and suggested combining ventilation with climate control systems.
She concluded that preparing means anticipating risks and altering structures before the next heatwave arrives. Preventing every fraction of a degree of warming reduces strain on cities, ecosystems, and human health.
