A Saint Petersburg court has arrested local resident Mikhail Belov on suspicion of brutally killing his partner with a mop during a dispute over jealousy.

The Joint Press Service of the Saint Petersburg court system announced the arrest on its official Telegram channel. Belov was detained by law enforcement shortly after the attack and fully admitted his guilt, according to court officials.
Investigators said the fatal confrontation occurred on October 8 between Belov and the woman he lived with. The accused was under the influence of both alcohol and illegal drugs when an argument broke out between the couple on grounds of jealousy.
Belov began striking the victim violently, landing at least 30 blows to her head, investigators said. He then armed himself with a mop and inflicted further wounds to her head, chest and abdomen, continuing the assault until she stopped showing signs of life.
Court statement and police detention
The regional court press service stated that Belov was taken into custody after the killing and formally placed under arrest. In Russia, regional court press services publish official notices regarding criminal detention hearings, judicial rulings and major cases being handled by city district courts. These court press offices serve as the primary public information channel for criminal arraignments and detention orders across the country's judicial districts.
Saint Petersburg is Russia's second largest city, situated on the Baltic Sea coast. Homicide inquiries and severe domestic violence cases in the municipality are investigated by state authorities before judges consider formal arrest warrants and proceed with criminal trials.
Related domestic violence rulings
The court announcement noted earlier domestic violence cases in Russian courts. In a separate case referenced alongside the arrest, a court in the Russian republic of Dagestan sentenced a man to nine years in prison after he strangled his female partner and buried her body.
Dagestan is a regional republic located in the North Caucasus in the southern part of Russia. Belov remains in detention in Saint Petersburg following his full confession to the violent attack on his partner.
