Australian period drama series My Brilliant Career, starring Philippa Northeast as aspiring writer Sybylla Melvyn, will premiere on Netflix on Thursday, August 13, 2026. The six-episode miniseries adapts the classic 1901 Australian novel of the same name, combining romance, drama, and social critique regarding the role of women at the start of the 20th century.
Set in Australia in 1900, the plot follows Sybylla, a passionate, witty, and stubborn young woman with an irrepressible spirit. While her grandmother and family insist that she find a good husband and accept strict social expectations of submission, Sybylla refuses to fit into traditional molds. She seeks the story that will give her independence as a writer, even though no one takes her ambitions seriously.
Choosing between adventure and marriage appears simple for Sybylla until she meets Harry Beecham, played by Christopher Chung. Beecham is a wealthy landowner whose arrival causes her perspective on love to change, forcing her to decide whether to risk everything for a creative life or sacrifice her dreams for marriage.
Adaptation of a classic Australian novel
The project is based on the semi-autobiographical 1901 novel of the same name by Australian author Miles Franklin, who wrote the classic book as a teenager. Screenwriter Liz Doran told Tudum that during the adaptation process, the writers never lost sight of Sybylla's primary goal of choosing her own path against society's wishes.
Doran explained that the conflict between love and a professional career serves as the common thread across all of their stories. She added that while contemporary women do not face the exact same matrimonial obstacles that Sybylla did, young women trying to make their way in the world still encounter enormous difficulties.
Alyssa McClelland and Anne Renton directed the miniseries from scripts written by Doran, Sarinah Masukor, and Rachael Turk. Doran's previous writing credits include the television series Barons and Please Like Me. Executive producers for the show are Chloe Rickard, Doran, and McClelland.
Cast and production details
Jungle Entertainment and the South Australian Film Corporation produced the miniseries. Principal photography took place in June 2025 near Penola in southeastern South Australia. Viewing the series requires an active subscription to Netflix.
The cast is led by Northeast alongside Chung, Kate Mulvany as Augusta Beecham, Genevieve O’Reilly as Helen Bossier, and Anna Chancellor in the roles of Mrs Bossier and Winifred Bossier. The ensemble also includes Jake Dunn as Frank Hawden, Alexander England as Julius Bossier, Sherry-Lee Watson as Nell Kirby, Miah Madden as Betty Kirby, Ella Oliphant as Gertie Melvyn, Molly Lewis as Whistler, Jarron Andy as Charlie, Mirrah Foulkes as Lucy Melvyn, and Nathan Page as Richard Melvyn. Reagan Mannix, Erik Thomson as Theodore, Max Mayer-Rayment as Jim Reid, and Rohan Nichol as Mr. McSwat also perform in the series.
