The sixth season of Only Murders in the Building will premiere on Disney+ on December 8 as the comedy series moves to London.
Disney+ announced the premiere date on Wednesday in an official statement, confirming that the upcoming installment will mark the first time an entire season takes place outside New York.
Lead actors Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez return as amateur podcasting sleuths Charles, Oliver and Mabel. The trio will leave their beloved Manhattan apartment building, The Arconia, to relocate to London for the new story arc.
Although the main characters previously traveled to Los Angeles during the fourth season, this upcoming sixth season will be the first time the entire plot unfolds in a setting other than New York City.
Disney+ said in its statement that after solving a new case and bringing the culprit to justice once again, Charles, Oliver and Mabel will face the most complicated investigation of their lives. The new mystery begins when their next victim, Cinda Canning, appears at their door asking them to travel to London and find her killer.
The streaming service added that the London-based season will introduce a lineup of eccentrically British characters to the storyline.
Cast and guest star additions
Meryl Streep returns to the cast as Loretta Durkin, a role she has played since the third season. Loretta is the girlfriend and eventual wife of Oliver, played by Short. Streep is an acclaimed American actress who joined the ensemble comedy in 2023.
Tina Fey also returns to the series as podcast producer Cinda Canning. The new season will feature guest appearances from British stars including Olivia Colman, David Tennant, Nicola Coughlan and Martin Freeman, as well as singer Geri Halliwell.
Colman is an Oscar-winning actress known for her roles in drama and comedy, while Tennant is widely recognized for starring in Doctor Who. Coughlan gained popularity in Bridgerton, and Freeman starred in The Office and The Hobbit trilogy. Halliwell rose to fame as a member of the pop group Spice Girls.
The show has previously hosted a long list of prominent guest stars, including Paul Rudd, Renee Zellweger, Shirley MacLaine, Cara Delevingne, Matthew Broderick, Jesse Williams, Nathan Lane, Eva Longoria, Zach Galifianakis, Jane Lynch, late-night host Jimmy Fallon, musician Sting and former tennis star John McEnroe.
Series background and awards
Only Murders in the Building was created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman, who also serve as the show's primary screenwriters. The comedy series follows three apartment neighbors obsessed with true crime who start a podcast after a murder occurs in their building.
The Arconia, where previous seasons were centered, is the fictional pre-war apartment building on Manhattan's Upper West Side that serves as the home and common bond for the primary trio.
The series has earned widespread critical acclaim, accumulating seven Emmy Awards across more than 60 nominations throughout its first five seasons. The Primetime Emmy Awards represent the primary honors for American television programming.
Disney+ is the flagship video streaming service owned by The Walt Disney Company. The platform will stream all episodes of the sixth season globally following its release on December 8.
